A older Fort Wayne suburb with affordable homes and plenty to do
Dozens of suburbs lay stitched across Southeast Fort Wayne, forming a patchwork of residential streets. Village Woods is a neighborhood that stands out from its peers as an affordable section of older Fort Wayne, whose very name encourages a connection with the outdoors. Located immediately south of McMillen Park and Golf Course, “Village Woods is an established neighborhood that’s walkable and accessible,” says Realtor Tiffiny Holmes of Keller Williams Fort Wayne. “It’s a great suburban area for families close to shopping centers, the McMillen Park and Golf Course, and schools.” Living in the older part of Fort Wayne brings lower costs than Downtown. “The neighborhood is great for young people buying starter homes and retirees as well,” says Realtor Bonnie Ranger of Century 21 Bradley Realty, Inc. “It’s just quaint.” Families have access to over half a dozen public and private schools, most less than two miles in each direction. The Citilink bus takes locals into Downtown to satisfy more recreational and shopping needs.

Neighboring McMillen Park has it all
Village Woods offers fresh air and green spaces in locals’ back yards. “It’s a highlight of this area,” says Holmes of McMillen Park, which lies on the other side of McKinnie Avenue. McMillen Park serves as the area’s focal point for recreation with many opportunities for residents to stretch their legs and stay active. Folks can join in on a soccer or football game on the ample open spaces, shoot hoops on one of the four newly resurfaced basketball courts, catch some rays and swim at the McMillen Pool, or practice their swing at the McMillen Golf Course, a smaller, par 65 course that winds through the trees for nine holes and is more open on the second nine. Kids explore the park’s jungle gym and playground and can engage in the Born Learning Trail, which creates a unique experience by combining outdoor fun with interactive learning. The McMillen Park Community Center hosts festivals for the community and provides public resources and facilities for after-school programs and classes. The park is also home to the Lifetime Sports Academy, which offers free summer group golf, tennis and swimming lessons for children aged 7 to 18. Kids can hone their skills for six weeks and get training from certified professionals and volunteers in all three sports. Those with advanced can explore lesson options in the winter program.

Wooded suburban streets feature affordable homes with a bit of character
Narrow streets blend seamlessly with individual driveways, with sidewalks absent from the streetscape altogether. Mature trees provide shade and punctuate otherwise simple, neat lawns. “The homes are not cookie-cutter; they’re very unique and still have nicely sized yards,” says Ranger. Minimalistic ranch styles are easily visible from the street in this pocket of southeast Fort Wayne. Split levels with a bit of character populate this mix of single-story homes. “The cost of living here is super affordable,” says Holmes, adding that pricing runs from about $150,000 to $200,000. “Four-bedroom, two-bathroom homes with garages are typical within that range.” The single-family price is $170,000, and homebuyers can expect to pay an average of $93 per square foot compared to $100 in surrounding neighborhoods.
