Fort Worth suburb with heritage
Historic Southside is a Fort Worth neighborhood that maintains pride in its roots but is also looking toward the future. “It has a lot of passion for its history,” says local Kristina Banta, a Realtor at Century 21 Judge Fite Company with 6 years of experience helping people buy around Fort Worth. “But it's also up and coming. There are a lot of homeowners that are part of Historic Southside’s homeowners' association, and they’re very active in keeping the neighborhood clean.” Growth can be seen in the renovated homes and new properties popping up all over town. But despite this change, the area’s history of African American culture remains strong through culinary staples and heritage museums.

Renovated bungalows and Craftsman homes
Historic Southside features a mix of old and new housing styles. Older homes tend to be wood Craftsman and cottage-style with spacious front porches, many in need of renovations and updates, selling from $100,000 to around $200,000. The majority of properties on the market have been remodeled or freshly built. These newer 1,000- to 2,500-square-foot bungalows with Craftsman influences and modern two-story dwellings, some with garages and fenced-in backyards, typically range between $225,000 and $450,000. Many houses in Historic Southside are built close together, giving the neighborhood an urban feel.

Black history showcased through museums and churches
Located in Historic Southside is The Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Society, a museum detailing Black history in the area. Full of historical documents, the society also keeps records of historic homes and buildings in the neighborhood. A block away is Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 for its service to the African American Community since its beginnings in 1929. The planned National Juneteenth Museum is expected to open in 2025 on the corner of Evans Avenue and Rosedale Street and will educate and celebrate while preserving the history of Juneteenth.

Active Historic Southside neighborhood association
According to CAP Index, Historic Southside receives the highest possible crime score of 10. While this may deter some from buying or patronizing within the community, a neighborhood association actively takes steps to promote togetherness and encourage progress in the area. The association holds an annual Literacy Carnival, complete with food tents, games and free books; highlights the accomplishments of students living in Historic Southside and hosts frequent neighborhood cleanups.

Texas-Soul BBQ at Smoke-A-Holics
Living in Historic Southside gives residents easy access to some of the best barbecue in the city. “This area has a lot of culture. There are barbecue places that are highly enjoyed by the neighborhood and people from the surrounding neighborhoods who come to eat here,” says Banta. On the southside on Rosedale Avenue, Smoke-A-Holics BBQ serves up all the classic meats like brisket, pork ribs and smoked turkey in a small, unassuming brick building. Locals enjoy the cornbread, baked beans and banana pudding almost as much as the barbecue itself. Another nearby staple is Mama E’s Bar-B-Q & Home Cooking, which also offers the classics. In the northern part of town is Wild Acre, a restaurant and beer garden serving burgers and craft beer where residents can gather on the covered patio while their kids run around on the green space. For groceries, a few neighborhood markets are peppered throughout the community, including People Food Store, Circle M Food Store and Bodega South Main.
