Access to Illinois' Chain O' Lakes in Northeastern Fox Lake
A collection of lakes connected by the Fox River and other channels linking communities to waterways comprise Illinois’ Chain O’ Lakes region. Northeast Fox Lake sits along four lakes—Nippersink Lake, Grass Lake, Pistakee Lake and Fox Lake —and borders Chain O’ Lakes State Park, which includes Turner Fen Nature Preserve, to the north. “One of the main reasons people move to the area is because they love the outdoors,” says Realtor Peggy Seiling with Lakes Realty Group. “Because of this, many neighbors have similar lifestyles, allowing for a close-knit community.”
Hiking, fishing and boating throughout Chain O' Lakes State Park
While living on or near the lakes affords a lakefront lifestyle, Chain O’ Lakes State Park is on the northern side of the neighborhood and provides even more outdoor access with over 6,500 acres of water and 488 miles of shoreline. Visitors can fish, cruise the lake or engage in watersports on the water, but there’s also plenty to do on land. The park has trails stretching from 2 to 8 miles for hiking and equestrian use. Hunters can obtain an archery permit to hunt deer. Camping is also popular, with visitors setting up tents and RVs along the park. Closer to the residential portion of Northeast Fox Lake, Fox Lake Country Club first opened in 1928 and is the only public golf course in the area. Along Lake Fox’s shoreline in downtown Lake Fox, Lakefront Park has a small beach where people can sunbathe or swim in the lake. The park also contains a playground and pickleball courts. The park's band shell hosts community events

Homes with docks and along channels throughout Northeast Fox Lake
The distance to lake access varies depending on the community, but most Northeast Fox Lake residents can access the Chain O’ Lakes from their backyards. While some properties may sit directly on the shoreline, channels snake through the communities so people can boat around the region. “Anyone living on the water has a dock,” says Realtor Dick Barr with Village Realty. “Even on the channels, there’s a good opportunity you’ll have a dock.” However, Barr does share that plenty of people live away from the water. Northeast Fox Lake’s narrow streets feature anything from midcentury modern condos and ranch-style houses to cottages built on wooden stilts and custom builds along the water. “It’s all over the place in a good way,” Barr says. “There’s a little bit of something for everyone.” Condos, townhouses and older homes typically sell between $75,000 to $350,000, but the newer and larger custom builds can sell anywhere between $600,000 and $900,000, especially if they are waterfront. “A lot of the old lots on the lake are tiny, narrow lots, so people will buy multiple lots and build a very large house there,” Barr says.

Fireworks and summer concerts over Fox Lake
From June to August, Lakefront Park hosts Friday Night Concerts at the bandshell, where residents can bring lawn chairs and blankets or listen from the comfort of their boats. The concert series showcases a different local band each week and brings out food trucks, but people can also picnic. For the Fourth of July, fireworks shoot off over Fox Lake. On Tuesday afternoons in the summer, people can peruse fresh produce and artisan and craft goods at the Fox Lake Farmers Market at Lakefront Park.

Lakeside Mexican and burger restaurants in downtown Fox Lake
Fox Lake’s boat culture is just as much functional as recreational. “Most of the restaurants on the lakes have docks,” Barr says. “We even have a McDonald’s in town that has a dock. When you’re finished up for the day, you dock over there for a bite.” Another dockable eatery is El Puerto Mexican Restaurant. The restaurant looks out over Nippersink Lake, where people can dine on the outdoor patio and enjoy the sunset with a margarita and tostadas. Dockers Restaurant is another lakeside destination with its docks decked out in string lights. Many people stop here to kick off their weekend with the Friday night fish fry, but Dockers also serves burgers and steaks. When on land, Whistle Stop Café serves breakfast favorites but is better known for its pies. The train-themed café’s little stained-glass window with a train on it greets visitors as they arrive, and model trains are displayed throughout the dining room. Because Northeast Fox Lake is all about lakeside living, grocery stores are a little farther away than other neighborhoods. The Jewel-Osco in Spring Grove is the closest option, about 4 miles west. About 6 miles south, there’s another Jewel-Osco and an Aldi past downtown Fox Lake.

Boating or driving to downtown from Northeast Fox Lake
While US-12 and State Park Road connect Northeast Fox Lake with the downtown area, residents can forgo driving and instead boat into town. Downtown Fox Lake and other destinations throughout the Chain O’ Lakes feature docks at popular lakeside restaurants and marinas scattered throughout the shorelines.
