On the western shores of Grass Lake
Northwest Fox Lake sits halfway between Spring Grove and the western shores of Grass Lake, not far from the Wisconsin state line. Life in the “Heart of the Chain O’Lakes” often orients around surrounding parks and boating opportunities. “The great thing about this area is the state and local parks,” says Theresa Hahl, office coordinator at Chain O’Lakes State Park. “Lake County as a whole has a lot of land and open space. I’ve lived here my entire life. We’re lucky to enjoy the natural beauty for free, it’s a great benefit to living here.” Located an hour north of Chicago, Northwest Fox Lake is almost entirely residential, with a CAP Index crime score of 2, compared to the national average of 4. Still, residents live within 7 miles of locally owned shops, regional festivities and amenities.
From Sundial Farms to Country Club Hills
Sundial Farms is a modern subdivision off Wilmot Road, lined with new traditional homes constructed between the 1990s and early 2000s, some of which are built on spacious lots overlooking wheat fields, local pastures and grazing horses. Prices vary between $525,000 and $700,000, while undeveloped lots of an acre or less range between $50,000 and $150,000.
South of Main Street Road, many ranch-style homes and split levels date back to the midcentury. Boats, canoes and personal watercraft are prevalent on lawns, along with old-growth trees. Alternatively, subdivisions branching off State Park Road have a more suburban feel with less space between homes. This is especially true of Country Club Hills, a townhome development across the street from Fox Lake Country Club. Altogether, single-family homes range between $150,000 and $350,000, while townhome units average about $260,000.
Living next door to Chain O’Lakes State Park
Just east of the neighborhood, Chain O’Lakes State Park is a 2,800-acre preserve with campgrounds, trails and a central lake. “People love walking the trails by the Fox River,” Hahl says regarding the 2-mile Gold Finch Trail. The spur is one of many veering off the Chain O’Lakes State Park trail. “We also have trailer and motorcoach parking for those riding the equestrian trails.” Additional paths lead to the Catfish Cove Fishing Pier on the Fox River. From there, guests can rent boats and head to Grass Lake, Fox Lake or Lake Marie. Blarney Island’s Caribbean party bar is located less than a mile offshore, with docks for boat or a $20 boat shuttle. Back on land, the Fox Lake Country Club offers an 18-hole course connected with the Country Club Hills subdivision. The 106-acre facility is open to the public.
Blarney Island is the Key West of the Midwest
A mile off the coast of Chain O’Lakes State Park, Blarney Island thrives in the summertime. Nicknamed “Key West of the Midwest,” the island hosts a themed Key West Fest featuring drag boat racing, live music, drinks and dancing. Boaters may also head to Lakefront Park for year-round festivities on the shore of Nippersink Lake. Guests raise funds for the Special Olympics each year at the Polar Plunge and return in the summer for a Friday night concert series. The Lakefront Park Farmer’s Market overlaps, highlighting local farmers and vendors selling candles, ceramics and fresh poultry.
Waterfront dining at Port of Blarney
Grass Lake Road is the main thoroughfare between Northwest Fox Lake and Lake Villa. The route stretches past Grass Lake, Petite Lake and Bluff Lake, with a handful of locally owned eateries along the way. Port of Blarney is a waterfront restaurant with a dog-friendly patio and tiki bar. Guests will find an RV park and marina— for those heading there by boat. Similarly, Sunset Grill Antioch overlooks the pier on Bluff Lake. The restaurant serves tropical-themed cocktails and seafood specials, from baked Icelandic cod to ahi tuna tacos. As for amenities, residents head 2 miles west on Route 12 for Spring Grove’s Jewel-Osco and Walgreens pharmacy. Locally owned boutiques and eateries are common in Antioch, 7 miles northeast. But retailers like Walmart Supercenter, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Home Depot are accessible 7 miles south in McHenry.
Nippersink School District 2
Northwest Fox Lake students attend Nippersink School District 2, beginning at Spring Grove Elementary. The school earns a B-plus on Niche and is located just west of the community on Main Street Road. Nippersink Middle School, located 8 miles west in Richmond, earns the same grade. Students finish out at Richmond-Burton High School, which also earns a B-plus. Though Richmond-Burton enrolls about 550 students, the school still offers 21 sports, 16 Advanced Placement courses and a booster club for parents and guardians.
The Fox Lake Metra offers a 2-hour ride to Chicago
Though residents of Sundial Farms can access Chain O’Lakes State Park from a hiking and biking path in the neighborhood, homebuyers won’t find any designated bike lanes or public transit options. According to the Lake County government, the nearest emergency room, Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, is also a large employer in the region. The medical center is 13 miles south. Chicago commuters can expect a 67-mile trip southeast on Interstate 94. The Metra in Fox Lake takes riders about 2 hours to reach the city. Pillow Hill Airport is a small, private strip. Most residents will fly commercially from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 52 miles south or Chicago Midway International, about 70 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
