A quiet lakefront lifestyle amidst the bustling Chain O’Lakes
Wooster Lake was once home to the Spirit Fruit Society, a communitarian group from the 1900s who lived off the land in a barn built by hand. The barn has since given way to several residential subdivisions. Still, the sense of privacy remains, especially compared to other Chain O’Lakes waterfronts.“People like the more secluded feel of Wooster Lake compared to some of the other big lakes in the area,” says Holly Blanchette, a Lake County expert and Realtor with Lakes Home Realty. “There are forested areas surrounding two small campgrounds and more private lots than in surrounding communities.” Further, the community's nearly 100-acre namesake lake is exclusive, limiting fishing and boating rights to residents.
From Wooster Lake fishing to Fox Lake boating
As the fourth deepest of the over 90 lakes in Lake County, Wooster is ideal for motorized and non-motorized boating and fishing. Residents with lake rights can head to the private sandy beach on the western shore to fish from the pier for black crappie, northern pike and largemouth and smallmouth bass. Some homes back up to the lake and can enjoy boating or fishing from private docks.
The neighborhood is situated between the county’s vast forest preserves, the closest being Grant Woods Forest Preserve. Its 6 miles of gravel trails traverse through prairies and wetlands. The preserve is open for biking, canoeing and kayaking in warmer months and cross-country skiing when Illinois winter hits. The Round Lake Area Park District—named one of the Illinois Association of Park Districts’ 2023 Best of the Best—has playgrounds, splash pads and lakefront recreation. In the summertime, Ruth Lodge and Leibow Lodge host summer camps and activities for children.
Private, lakefront lots and tidy developments
Houses built between the 1920s and 1960s line the curving, tree-enveloped lanes between Wooster Lake Avenue and Sunnybrook Road. Some sit close to the road, while others are farther back at the end of gravel paths. Lakefront Tudor-style homes with meandering driveways and 1-acre lots intermingle with modest bungalows and split-level houses. Most have large lots and occasionally include private docks, but they're no longer the only option with lake rights. At the northernmost end of the lake is Tanneron Bay, a development of two-bedroom, late 1990s townhouses with 1,300 to 1,700 square feet. Homeownership here and in Cambridge at Holiday Park—another subdivision with townhouses with walkout basements and condos—includes access to the private beach at Wooster Lake. Silver Leaf Glen, Wooster Lake’s largest and highest-priced subdivision, features modern traditional builds and Colonial Revivals with attached two-to-three-car garages and half-acre lots. Home prices in the area range from about $140,000 to $440,000.
Getting around Lake County and commuting to Chicago
Wooster Lake is a car-dependent community, but boat travel is an option for recreation. Boaters can drop in at Pastekee Lake to the west of the community and connect to the several connected lakes to the north. Big Hollow Road leads to the Route 12 corridor to the west and Round Lake Beach to the east. These routes lead to Chicago O'Hare International Airport, 40 miles, and downtown Chicago, a 55-mile trip. The Milwaukee District North Metra line also cuts through Lake County—with Fox Lake being the final stop on the line—and Long Lake Station is 2 miles away on Big Hollow Road. Commuters and day-trippers take the hour and 40-minute trip to Chicago Union Station. Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital is the largest nearby healthcare center, 10 miles west of Wooster Lake.
Nearby grocery stores and Fox Lake afternoons
Groceries and dining are about 2 miles from the neighborhood. “There's a Jewel-Osco and an Aldi at the Route 12 and 134 Intersection and some good restaurants up in Fox Lake,” Blanchette says. “Or you could head east into Grayslake for the nice downtown feeling.” Rookie’s Sports Bar and Grill, is a lively place to catch a game or play the slots. Folks heading up to Fox Lake for a day on the Chain O'Lakes can grab dinner at waterfront dine-ins like Dockers Restaurant, which hosts a Sunday brunch and Friday Fish Fry from its indoor seating area and outdoor patio. It’s a 7.5 mile drive to Grayslake’s village-style shopping, where local digs like Fred’s Diner are doors down from classy The Vine Martini & Wine Bar.
