20th-century colonials and contemporary apartments
The vast expanse of green countryside west of New Brunswick is home to the unincorporated community of Somerset, whose history dates to the early years of the United States. Realtor Mark J. Schmidt of RE/MAX Country says, “It’s got such a long history; it was originally settled by Lenape Native Americans many years ago, and Franklin Township was originally incorporated on 21 February 1798.” This makes Franklin one of the New Jersey’s first townships, and the area known as Somerset has retained much of its rural charm as Franklin underwent suburbanization.
Somerset’s winding roads twist and turn through suburbia and countryside alike, providing a variety of scenic backdrops for homebuyers. Colonial-style homes are incredibly popular both within Somerset and across the state, and, while an abundance of vintage colonials dating to the early decades of the 20th century can be found in the East Franklin section, recently built family homes line new developments off Middlebush Road. This expansive community is also home to several contemporary apartments and ranch-style homes, adding to the diversity of living styles that can be enjoyed here. Homes in Somerset tend to sell for between $450,000 and $500,000, well below the county average and standing out among its peers in neighboring Edison and the Brunswicks.

Colonial Park and Snyder's Farm get residents outdoors
Beyond Somerset’s retail scenes lay vast stretches of countryside, much of which can be explored at parks such as Colonial Park, home to a scenic rose garden as well as sports facilities for athletically-inclined visitors. The nearby Delaware and Raritan Canal has been converted into a hiking trail, enabling exploration of this scenic waterway. At Somerset’s southern end, locals can explore Somerset’s agricultural history by visiting Snyder’s Farm, where you can go pumpkin and strawberry picking, shop at the farmer’s market, behold the historic farmhouse, and even meet the farm animals, from goats to cows.

Popular local restaurants like Somerset Pizza
While Somerset is known for its spacious feel, one of its greatest benefits is its proximity to major amenities. Schmidt says, “You’re close to everything; you’ve got shopping and entertainment nearby, it’s a quick trip to the beach, and it’s great for commuters, as you’ve got easy access to the train and buses to New York. There’s lots of parks, and we have a great library. We’ve got something for everyone here.”
Somerset is home to a half-dozen shopping centers, from a ShopRite at Franklin Center to Rutgers Plaza on the Raritan River and several smaller strip malls. Amenities from East Franklin’s boutique stores to popular restaurants can be found throughout Somerset, whether along urbanized main streets or country roads. One of the community’s most popular restaurants is Stateside Tap + Tavern, located at the heart of the community. Here, diners can enjoy grill classics from burgers to fish and chips, as well as a variety of appetizers and drinks. Next door, Somerset Pizza & Restaurant offers a menu of Italian classics and, of course, its signature New York-style pizzas. At the other end of The Shoppes at Pierce Street, beer lovers can have an adventure tasting the great variety of beverages at the Jersey Cyclone Brewing Company.
