About Freeport, TX

About Freeport, TX

Natural beachy vibes

Located south of Houston and sitting right on the Gulf Coast, Freeport combines natural beachy vibes with modest homes, lots of seafood-focused dining options and plentiful outdoor recreational opportunities. Despite the high flood risk, potential buyers are drawn to the area for its affordable prices and highly rated school district. The untouched beaches are free of commercial development and add to the slow pace and small-town feel of Freeport. The town’s history dates back to 1912 when it was first founded as a settlement. The first school was built a few years later and the town quickly began to grow soon after. The Freeport Historical Museum just had its grand reopening in 2024 and welcomes visitors to explore over 300 years of Freeport history.

From splash park to golf course

There are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities in Freeport, from the Freeport Splash Park to the Freeport Golf Course, an 18-hole experience designed for players of every skill level. Bryan Beach stretches for about 3 miles along the Gulf Coast. Visitors can fish or relax and soak up some sun. The beach hasn’t been built up with boardwalks and shops so residents can enjoy the serene landscape and local wildlife. Riverside Park sits along the Brazos River and is filled mostly with baseball diamonds, so be careful not to send any foul balls into the water. Just east of the city is the Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area, which sprawls for 12,000 acres and is filled with hiking, biking and fishing opportunities. Austin Park and Arrington Park are small neighborhood parks with playgrounds, basketball courts and plenty of open green space.

Lots and lots of seafood

Due to its coastal location, Freeport is filled with all sorts of seafood-focused eateries. Belly’s on the Brazos is a popular waterfront dining destination with classic surf and turf dishes from burgers to shrimp to fish sticks. Outrigger’s Bar & Grill has views of the Brazos River as well and is locally loved for its cold beer and fried seafood. Captain Mark’s is sought out for its freshness and for fan favorites like jalapeno hush puppies and crab legs. For grocery needs, residents can find Arlan’s Market, CVS, Dollar General and Bucee’s along Highway 288.

Modestly priced homes

Homes in Freeport range from $100,000 ranch-style homes to $250,000 bungalows to $500,000 homes on the Brazos River. Homes range from 700 to 3,000 square feet in size. Lots are typically under an acre in size and most homes were built before 1950. The average number of days on the market for Freeport is more than double the national average. Freeport has some areas with a high flood risk since it’s located along the Gulf of Mexico. About 99% of properties have the potential to be affected by flood damage in the next 30 years. Areas of high concern include residential, roads, commercial and critical infrastructure. The county publishes a disaster guide on its website each year to help residents prepare for the likely event of a flood.
