Suburban hot spot sits aside cluster of lakes
The Brookvale neighborhood of Fremont is filled with homes that were built in the 1970s and 1980s to meet the demand for housing near Silicon Valley. The homes are still highly sought after by those who seek suburban living with access to Bay area employers, selling in an average of just 11 days on the market. Set on sidewalk-lined streets dotted with coast live oaks, bay laurels and ginkgoes, many of the homes are updated and have generous lawns and diverse landscaping. And the neighborhood has reaped the benefits of a project to revitalize a set of quarries that had been dug up during the building of the transcontinental railroad. Quarries filled with fresh water and recreational facilities in place, the homes in Brookvale now sit aside a cluster of lakes that draws people from near and far for water activities and community events.

Quarry Lakes: big draw for Brookvale and surrounding communities
Visitors of Quarry Lakes Regional Park hike, boat, swim and fish for bass, catfish and trout. No gas motors are allowed on the lakes, and occasional blue-green algae warnings restrict swimming and fishing, but the area is always popular for viewing wildlife. The habitat is home to bald eagles, coyotes, geese and herons. A Beer City Festival is held there annually, with 5k’s, 10k’s and half marathons in the morning and music and beer in the afternoon. “Quarry Lakes is an amazing resource,” says Adam Ray, an organizer of Beer City Fest, which holds events around the region. “About 20 percent of people come to the festival from the Fremont area, and people travel in from all over the Bay area as well.”
