Established bedroom community filled with history in Niles Canyon
Rooted in history and the natural beauty of the Fremont Hills, the Canyon Heights-Vallejo Mills neighborhood provides a haven from modern troubles. The diverse community is home to many Silicon Valley workers, with technology companies like Apple, Google and Facebook nearby. In fact, San Francisco is 45 miles away, and Oakland is 27. Named for the Vallejo Flour Mills from the 1850s, this almost entirely residential neighborhood offers scenic views of the hills, miles of walking trails for outdoor enthusiasts and numerous recreational opportunities. “I’m a third-generation native of Fremont. I grew up in the Vallejo Mills area, attended school there, and my parents lived there until they passed. It’s a very popular area because of its location east of Mission Boulevard and against the foothills,” says Steve Pierce, a Broker with Keller Williams Advisors and decades of experience.

Little League, stunning views and an artificial lake
Vallejo Mill Historical Park rests at the western edge of Canyon Heights-Vallejo Mills. It commemorates where one of the two Vallejo Flour Mills once stood. The open grassy space has a walking trail, and parts of the stone aqueduct that carried water from Alameda Creek to the mill can be seen on Niles Canyon Road. Vallejo Mill Park is home to the Niles-Centerville Little League. Located next to the elementary school, this green space consists of four baseball diamonds of varying sizes. The Vargas Plateau Regional Park makes up much of the neighborhood. This expansive space in the Fremont Hills has six miles of multi-use trails, offering stunning panoramic views from 1,000 feet above the canyon floor. Central Park is just south of the neighborhood. This 450-acre space was developed in the 1960s along with Lake Elizabeth, a shallow 83-acre artificial lake. Repeatedly voted the best park in the Tri-City area, people come to walk or bike the 2-mile trail, take their pups to the dog park or shred at the Fremont Skate Park. There are also four playgrounds, a golf course, a water park and various athletic fields and courts.
Nearby, Niles operates several museums. Opened in 1938, the Solon Brothers Gas Station and Diner has been converted from a vintage fueling spot into a community history museum. Now called the Niles Flying A, its social club holds regular cookouts and car shows. The Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum pays homage to the groundbreaking Essanay Film Company, an early studio that produced five of Charlie Chaplin’s movies in Niles. Portions of ‘The Tramp’ were filmed in Canyon Heights-Vallejo Mills on Niles Canyon Road. The museum has a 100-seat nickelodeon theater and hosts the popular Chaplin Days each May. The festival began in 1979 and features three days of train rides, walking tours and a Chaplin look-alike contest.

Natural disaster risks and low crime score
Homes along Alameda Creek have a higher chance of flooding than other residences in the area, and wildfires can spark quickly due to the area’s dry climate. Winds from the hills can spread the flames, so homeowners are encouraged to keep debris away from their houses. Earthquakes are common in the area, although only one in 1989 was severe enough to be declared a national disaster. The city is working to finalize a local hazard mitigation plan to combat adverse outcomes from natural disasters. The neighborhood also has a very low crime risk. It earned a score of 2 out of 10 on the CAP Crime Index, half the national average of 4.
