Country living just outside Santa Rosa
Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to Fulton, of course. Long a center for poultry processing, this rural town sits just north of the Santa Rosa city limits, bordering two exits’ worth of US 101. Named for brothers Thomas and James Fulton, the area's 19th-century developers, Fulton has been home to a working post office since 1871 — but it's this wine-country farming community's charming farmhouses and sprawling vineyards that are truly memorable. "Fulton is a wonderful rural area of Santa Rosa that still retains its country feeling," says Tammra Borrall, a Realtor with Compass Real Estate in Santa Rosa, who has been a top-selling real estate professional in Sonoma County for over a decade. "Being technically part of Santa Rosa now, Fulton is a great balance of living the country life while still being close to town and conveniences, like shopping and the hospital. It's a really wonderful representation of Sonoma County wine-country living."

Vintage farmhouses and wine-country estates
Many of Fulton's farmhouses were built during the Victorian era, and 20th-century Craftsman and ranch-style homes also dot the landscape. Home sizes range from 1,100 to 3,100 square feet, and prices span from $450,000 for a 1940s fixer-upper to $2 million for a multi-acre estate or vineyard. Fulton's gently worn streets lack sidewalks, but that doesn’t keep residents from walking their dogs and themselves, taking in the wide open fields of grass and grapevines. Cul-de-sacs that branch off Fulton and River roads keep side-street traffic to a minimum, and some of the neighborhood's weeping willows, live oaks and sky-reaching pines have been there for more than a century. Echoes of the past are all around in the corrugated-tin warehouses and weathered barns, the white picket fences and railroad crossings.

Nearby city parks and sprawling vineyards
For some outdoor time, Santa Rosa's Coffey Park, where visitors can enjoy a playground, dog park, outdoor fitness equipment and a walking path, is a quick drive from the center of Fulton, and living in California wine country, Fulton residents are spoiled for choice when it comes to scenic stops for a glass of vino. They can sip and socialize with local winery folk at the gleaming oak-paneled bar of the Vintner’s Resort, a spa hotel set amid a working vineyard; or they can explore the selection of nearby vineyards along River Road, Slusser Road and Olivet Lane. At Redwood Highway's Fulton Road exit, sits the Kendall-Jackson chateau-style wine estate, which features a spectacular culinary garden, where “KJ,” as those local winery folk call it, sources the bounty for its al fresco food-and-wine pairings. Known for its reserve chardonnays, KJ also hosts popular wine-related events, including the annual Taste of Sonoma wine-and-food festival in June.

Farmstands and local restaurants within a short drive
The Kendall Jackson winery isn't the only Fulton-area locale with home-grown culinary delights. Mike’s Truck Garden, a popular family-owned farmstand, sells everything from seasonal produce to milk, eggs and bread at favorable prices — and has fans both near and far. “I live about 10 miles away, practically next door to a Whole Foods,” says longtime Santa Rosa resident Erika Vitali, “but I prefer to go to Mike’s whenever I can swing it. They have some of the best produce in the county, but I also love their cheeses and their old-fashioned candy. It’s like a cross between a small-town general store and a permanent farmers market.” In addition, fruit-and-veggie farm Tierra Vegetables runs its own nearby farmstand, where in addition to produce, cornmeal and seasonings, customers find wool products spun from the farm's own fluffy sheep. For everyday grocery needs, there's a Molsberry Market just east of US 101, about 2 miles from Fulton, and most area eateries are found off the Fulton Road exit, in an office-park-adjacent strip mall at the corner of Aviation and Airport boulevards. There, hungry Fulton folks will find Momo’s, a casual Nepalese spot that serves traditional whole-wheat momo dumplings, as well as wraps and build-your-own rice bowls. Kaffe Mocha Bar & Grill is essentially a diner, but their huge menu features anything from loaded baked potatoes to specialty coffees. Airport Stadium 12, where the plush leather seats all but lie flat, is a great spot to catch a movie before or after a meal.
