A community near downtown Gainesville got a new park
Less than 10 years ago, a previously contaminated rail yard in Gainesville's Springfield neighborhood was reimagined as a community hub and recreational space. The site, Depot Park, was funded by the Regional Brownfield Pilot grant. Springfield has been the subject of great development, led by initiatives from the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area. Over the years, GCRA has spearheaded changes through landscaping, sidewalk improvements and other projects. Although the area is changing, landmarks like the Cotton Club Museum connect to the neighborhood's beginning. The area is closely related to other historic neighborhoods like Porter's Community and Pleasant Street; each are among the city's oldest Black communities. "We have Black communities in Gainesville that are more awake, mindful and sensitive than most will ever know or care to document," says Otis Garrison, a county resident and manager of a nearby community farm. "We have a beautiful, rich culture. But you won't know that unless you dig into it or are intentionally connecting."
Depot Park is a great place to take your high-energy pup.

Buying into Springhill
The community has a mix of modest cottages and Florida Cracker-inspired architecture from the first half of the 20th century. However, there are also more recent, new traditional styles built in the 2020s. Older cottages often sit on raised foundations made of concrete blocks. Updated homes have fresh coats of paint, new roofs and remodeled kitchens and baths. Many houses in the community are still in need of repair. Homes built over the last five years can sit next to a concrete block dwelling from the 1950s. The My Neighborhood program from the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area assists residents in purchasing Springfield homes and vacant lots. "The area is very popular for new buyers and also those who want to be close to the downtown area and campus," says Keelan Cox, a Gainesville native and Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. Homes sit on the market for longer than the national average and range in price from $200,000 to $275,000.

Since its grand opening, Depot Park has been a premier spot for community events, afternoon walks and quiet moments along the waterside promenade. The grounds also have a play area and splash pad. The onsite Cade Museum offers educational programs and connects Springhill to the neighboring Innovation District. The Depot Avenue Rail Trail cuts across Springhill, offering an alternative route for foot traffic. The path links to nearby communities as part of the larger Waldo Road Greenway. Many residents can walk to other outdoor spaces, like Lincoln Park and Springhill Neighborhood Park.
