A mellow respite from UF
Walking north from the lush environs of the University of Florida into University Park feels like a gradual and relatively seamless transition from the dynamic energy of the UF Gainesville campus to a neighborhood filled with university professors and upwardly mobile professionals. The farther north one goes, the more the sounds of student life fade away and are replaced by the ever-present hum of cicadas and Florida breeze. But residents live contentedly knowing they’re within walking distance of wild green spaces and amenities. Jonathan Mills, Team Leader of The Mills Group at Keller Williams Gainesville Realty Partners, says some of the best restaurants in the city are around here. And UF has some of the liveliest cultural and sporting events around.
Tacos on a patio
El Indio Mexican Restaurant is on Northwest 13th Street, the city’s main north-south thoroughfare that borders University Park on the east side. Locals and students mob the counter and eat outside—the only option—next to colorful murals. The Social at Midtown is on the border between UF and University Park. It’s a popular spot for students and locals alike, especially during football season. A giant Publix at the intersection of University Avenue and NW 13th Street is the best place for groceries.
Midcentury masterpieces
The expansive lawn of the university library and continuous covering of cabbage palms and live oaks lead past student housing and French-inspired condominium apartment buildings toward midcentury homes. It’s not uncommon to see university-aged skateboarders rocketing across a half-pipe in front of a charming if rickety, ranch-style home next to a grand old colonial looking like something out of “Gone with the Wind.” New construction, too, of sleek condos makes clear University Park is a desirable neighborhood. Condo prices range from $300,000 to $400,000. Ranch-style homes, bungalows and Craftsmans list from $400,000 all the way to $1 million, depending on renovations. At the top of the market, sleek midcentury moderns, Dutch farmhouses designed by famous postwar architects, and Mediterranean mansions are listed for $1 million and over.
Birdwatching at Loblolly Woods Nature Park
Loblolly Woods Nature Park spans the northwest boundaries of the neighborhood. The park has 160 wild acres of swamps, mangroves and, yes, loblolly pine trees, through which wooden boardwalks snake, making it a popular spot for birdwatchers. Golfers must be affiliated or a guest of an affiliate of UF to play at UF’s Mark Bostick Golf Course, a block south of University Ave.
Cultural amenities at UF
Library West is also on University Ave., a block from The Social, and, like all UF libraries, is open to the public. A green walk half a mile south across campus leads to a cluster of museums also open to the public. With a collection of over 8,000 works of modern art, the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art is one of the largest university museums in the country. The Florida Museum of Natural History houses over 40 million artifacts and has a butterfly garden. There are also concert venues and stadiums on campus, most notably Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, home of the nationally famous Florida Gators football team.
Good schools close by
Public schools are within walking distance from most homes. Carolyn Beatrice Parker Elementary School received a B on Niche. Howard W. Bishop Middle School received a B-plus. Gainesville High School received an A. Gainesville High offers dual enrollment classes with the University of Florida.
Easy to walk
It’s possible to get around by bike or on foot in University Park, especially for those working at UF, which is the city’s largest employer. Busses run frequently along University Ave. and NW 13th Street. Drivers may take nearby state roads out of the city. Humidity and noise from Gator fans are the only feasible environmental nuisances for residents, most of whom don’t mind either.
UF is the gift that keeps on giving
“The bat houses at the Florida Museum of Natural History are so cool,” says Rocky Lyon of Pepine Realty. “Every night, the bats fly out at sunset, and people gather to watch them. Gainesville residents get a lot of benefits from the university." Can anyone say, Go, Gators?
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
