A historic, coastal community in Galveston
The Old Silk Stocking Historic District is named as a nod to the vast wealth of the area’s original residents. Developed in the 1870s, the area was an economic hub due to the Texas Cotton Press. Once the press went bankrupt in the 1890s, Old Silk Stocking turned into a residential community, offering a fun place to live, work and play on Galveston Bay. “People really love the historical aspect of the city. Galveston has a lot of Victorian architecture, and all the houses tell a story,” says Sharron Hensley, a Realtor with HomeSmart and a native Houstonian. Current residents of these homes open their doors, to neighbors and tourists alike, and share their stories every May. This is known as the annual historic homes tour, according to Hensley. “My husband and I moved to Galveston seven years ago and being here on the water really brings out the best in people,” says Hensley. “I joke with my husband that being here has lowered our blood pressure. Our doctor noticed it’s gone down, and when he asked what we’re doing differently, we said, ‘We moved to Galveston.’”

The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is a local amusement park that features carnival games, food and thrilling rides. The Galveston Artillery Club is one of the oldest historical landmarks in the area, established in 1840. With a route that goes straight down Rosenberg Street, neighbors have a front-row view of the festivities from their porch or balcony every February. The community also hosts an annual Coastwide Spring Cleanup in April, and during the Christmas season, the neighborhood throws a holiday party in early December.
