Beachfront living on the west side of Galveston
The tip of the island is just the tip of the iceberg at Pointe West. Located at the furthest western end of Galveston, Pointe West is a small beachfront community mainly popular among vacationers and part-time residents. “It’s more of a resort-type area, more vacationers, and there are some people that live there full time, but it’s mostly resort and vacation-type homes,” says Susan Cahill, Agent with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. “It’s a little more secluded out there, and people just want to be close to the beach and the bay to go out on the water.” While the west side of the island lacks the shopping, dining and museums that make East End Galveston so popular, West Enders often spend their days fishing, birdwatching or relaxing on the beach, whether they are there all year or for just a few weeks.
Pointe West spans across Galveston Island, featuring both beach and bay access.
Pointe West is located on Galveston Island's southernmost point.

Birds and beach bums alike flock to San Luis Beach
Birders and anglers alike can enjoy the day at San Luis Beach, located at the very tip of the island. Birdwatchers take to the sand flats to catch glimpses of larks and plovers, and fishermen can cast their lines into the open water of the San Luis Pass. Smaller beaches dot the south side of the island along Termini-San Luis Pass Road, like Half Moon Beach and Terramar Beach. Further up the island, bird enthusiasts can also visit Dos Vaca Muertas Bird Sanctuary, a 6-acre marsh that fills with kites, herons and pelicans every spring.
Pointe West offers many fishing opportunities with its proximity to both the Gulf and the bay.

West End serves live tunes, water views and fresh-caught seafood
Most businesses in Pointe West are hotels, RV parks and vacation rentals, with a small selection of shopping and dining mixed in. The largest restaurant in the area is The West End Marina and Restaurants on Burnet Drive, which combines fresh seafood with waterfront views. “Most of our locals say you gotta go to the West End Marina, and you can get there by golf cart,” says Shani Atkinson, Realtor with Galveston Island Real Estate. “My husband likes the barbeque shrimp, or you can get them fried, blackened, grilled. We like it all.” The West End also hosts weekly live music every Thursday and opens early for brunch on the weekends.
There are no large shopping centers on the west side of Pointe West, so markets and convenience stores like Sea Isle Supermarket on Termini-San Luis Pass Road provide basic groceries. There are also very few houses of worship on the west end of the island. One of the closest churches is Church of the Living God Galveston on 7 Mile Road, 18 miles from Pointe West.

Bayside condo buildings painted in candy colors are numerous. A condo can cost between $300,000 and $600,000, depending on the size of the unit and the amenities offered by the complex. Elevated beach houses in varying shades of blue are built close together in neat rows, with narrow yards, bright flower beds and seemingly endless palm trees in between. These homes start at $500,000 for a 3-bedroom vacation home and can reach $2 million for a 3,000-square-foot resort-style home.
