On the fringes of the southeast suburbs
Part of the township of Ross in northwest Indiana, about 35 miles southeast of downtown Chicago, is the Ross neighborhood. “It’s still close enough to be considered a commuter township,” says Jason Moon, broker and team lead of the Jason Moon Realty Group with over years of real estate experience with a concentration in northwest Indiana. “Not everyone works in downtown Chicago - some may work around northwest Indiana. Going another 20 miles south means you lose that commuter, suburban area.”
Transportation options
Interstate 65 is a short drive east that leads to other northwest Indiana suburbs. It’s between a 45-minute to an hour commute into downtown Chicago. “To be truthful, it’s not bad because not as many people from northwest Indiana commute into downtown as do the Illinois suburbs,” Moon says. The South Shore commuter train line goes into downtown with the closest stations in East Chicago or Gary. There are plans to expand the rail south to Munster, Hammond and Dyer, all west of Ross. “That should open in a year and make the trip to a train station easier,” he adds. The Griffith-Merrillville Airport is also located close to the neighborhood. The airport was initially designed for smaller aircraft. In December of 2023, the airport was purchased by Gary/Chicago International Airport. This could lead to improvement and expansion at the airport in the future.
Brews and Asian fusion
One of the neighborhood hangouts is Wildrose Brewing, which is in a large warehouse and is the brainchild of five friends who decided to turn their fun hobby into a business. Some of the unique flavors and names of the beers include S’Morey Povich, a chocolate porter with graham crackers and caramel. Food is also served with pizza, sandwiches and tacos. It may be a little out of the way of the neighborhood, but Asparagus is an Asian fusion Thai restaurant in Ross Township proper. “It’s more of a special occasion and fine dining place,” Moon says. “It’s in the top 10 of my favorite restaurants in northwest Indiana.” For something more casual and perhaps more messy, Big Daddy’s Barbecue started over 15 years ago as an option at the Market City Flea Market in Gary, which led to the restaurant's opening on Cleveland Street. ALDI is located near the intersection of Ridge Road and Colfax Street for more than just a few grocery items. Family Dollar is also available for a quick stop.
Wildrose Brewing commissioned a local painter to paint this mural on the side of the building.
Inside of Big Daddy's BBQ has plenty of comfortable seating for a whole family.

The occasional new house
Minimal Traditional, ranch-style and split-level houses from the 1920s through the ‘70s, with the price range between $120,000 and $250,000 for single-family homes. Since houses are not built as close together as in more dense suburbs, some homes are on bigger lots, up to an acre or two. Homes built within the past 30 years have up to 4,000 square feet and are priced between $350,000 and $400,000. Seventy-two percent of the people living in Ross own their homes.
A portion of a trail makes a Ross appearance
While there is a lot of greenery in the neighborhood, which leads to houses being situated on more land, there’s no official park. However, some of the Oak Savannah Bike Trail goes through the neighborhood’s southern end. The trail runs from Hobart and Griffith and is nearly 18 miles round-trip. It’s a paved surface that is also ideal for walkers and joggers. Dogs are also allowed if they are on a leash.

GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
