Bucolic living outside of Allegheny County
Curving around a bend in the Monongahela River, Union Township sits less than 20 miles south of Pittsburgh in southeastern Pennsylvania. Located just outside of Allegheny County, the neighborhood is divided by Route 43, which links the area to the Steel City. “You get the benefits of being close to Pittsburgh and the suburbs without the expense,” says Michelle Rollins, a real estate broker for simpliHOM. “That’s what has developed those areas, because of the closeness of the city and not having to pay Allegheny taxes. It’s a big draw.” Union Township’s bucolic appearance lends a serene atmosphere to the area, with many single-family homes lodged in the gently undulating hills west of the Monongahela. The borough of Finleyville sits within the neighborhood, as well.
Numerous parks surrounding Union Township
The township is close to a number of parks and other outdoor venues. Rollins mentions two in particular as being local favorites: South Park and Mingo Creek County Park. North of Union Township, South Park sprawls across about 2,000 acres of green space and offers a variety of sporting facilities, ranging from fields to courts, as well as a game preserve, action sports facility, dog park and ice rink. Mingo Creek County Park has trails, historic covered bridges and a play area. Golfers can hit the links at the 1781 Club to the west or at Riverview Golf Course, which sits east across the Monongahela. On the river itself, locals can dive into the water, cast lines for fish or go paddling in canoes or kayaks. Beedle Park and Lobb's Park each sit close to the northeastern corner of Union Township and have sports fields and courts, while Evans Park sits north of the neighborhood and has both softball fields and tennis courts. Within the neighborhood, Union Township Recreation Park has a ballfield and playground.

Ranch-style homes dot the landscape
Union Township is mostly comprised of single-family homes, with ranch-style houses built into the rolling landscape being the most common style. Homebuyers can also find some split-level homes, along with occasional Cape Cods and colonial styles. “There are a lot of ranch-style homes sitting on large parcels of land,” Rollins says. “It’s a country setting. Union Township is kind of divided between the ranch-style homes and the newly-developed areas from the 1980s and 1990s. That’s where we typically see a lot of split-entry homes, and Union Township has recently seen some growth closer to the Allegheny side.” Single-family homes typically cost between $150,000 and $300,000.
Union Township has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Local concerts, historic commemorations and more
Mingo Creek County Park is also a venue for celebrations. “They have events all year long,” Rollins says. “The Covered Bridge Festival is one of the big ones that they do, and a lot of people actually travel to this part of the state for that.” The event commemorates the covered bridges in the area, many of which are listed on historic registers. South Park also serves as a local gathering spot. “South Park does small music events,” Rollins says. “Car shows and the smaller concerts are a big thing there, and they do various sporting events.” South Park is also the site of celebrations like Pour at the Park, which caters to all ages and spotlights local drinks. Trax Farms Market hosts annual gatherings like a fall festival.

Heading toward Pittsburgh for shopping and dining
Residents can reach a few local restaurants along Route 88. The Beach House Restaurant serves up breakfast food, while the nearby Tiki Bar has a parking lot to accommodate motorcycles and hosts live music. V&V Scratch Kitchen sits within the neighborhood and includes vegan options on its menu, but residents often have to head beyond Union Township for restaurants. “There’s not much shopping and dining,” Rollins says, “but it’s not far from great shopping in Allegheny County.” About 11 miles north, Southland Shopping Center sits closer to Pittsburgh and has chain stores and restaurants. Grocery shoppers can find deli, bakery and produce goods at the Trax Farms Market, which sits within the neighborhood, or at a Giant Eagle Supermarket.

Heading north or south on Route 43
Route 43 bisects the neighborhood, running from south of Pittsburgh down into West Virginia. “Union Township has good access to Route 43, which is a toll road,” Rollins says. “That’s really the only highway. You can take other roads, but there’s not easy highway access into the city.” An interchange with Interstate 70 sits about 15 miles south of Union Township. Pittsburgh is about 20 miles north, and some commuters to the city call Union Township home. “Union Township is closer to the Allegheny County border, so that demographic kind of gears more toward commuters as opposed to people living and working in the valley. We see more people working in and on the south side of Pittsburgh that live in Union Township.”
