Homes and commercial sections along Onondaga Lake
On the shores of Onondaga Lake in central New York, Lakeland is less than 10 miles from downtown Syracuse and occupied by a residential sector and commercial area. Residents of the area are close to Syracuse, restaurants, the lake and other recreational areas, as well as shopping and malls, but they don’t sacrifice quiet streets for that convenience. “You’re in your own community,” says Chip Hodgkins, the team leader of the Hodgkins Home Team of Hunt Real Estate. “You’d never know you’re that close to everything because of the suburban living.” The New York State Fairgrounds also sits within Lakeland, and the annual New York State Fair draws hundreds of thousands of attendees over a nearly-two-week celebration.
Recreation and holiday events at Onondaga Lake Park
Lakeland Park is the only green space in the neighborhood, featuring three ballfields, two basketball courts, two tennis courts and a playground among its amenities. However, recreation is available on and across the water at Onondaga Lake, right beside Lakeland. Onondaga Lake Park stretches for much of the northern-facing shores of the lake, featuring a dozen pickleball courts, a skate park, an expansive play area and nearby marina. “There’s trails that go around the lake,” Hodgkins says. “It’s really pretty. The lake is good for kayaking and the park is great for walking, rollerblading and biking. There’s so many activities and some free concerts.”
Visitors can also go boating on the lake, rent bikes at the park or walk their dogs. “Onondaga Park is amazing,” says Tabitha Cleveland, an associate broker with Keller Williams Realty. “The walking paths are gorgeous and people love to walk, bike and picnic there.” Portions of the Empire State Trail also snake into Lakeland itself, as well. In the winter, Lights on the Lake started more than 30 years ago and celebrates the holiday season. Onondaga Lake Park hosts the event, and motorists can drive through a two-mile long route filled with seasonal light displays. Several golf courses, like the Camillus Golf Club and Foxfire Golf Course, are also in the area and each have an 18-hole course.

Shopping and dining in and beyond Lakeland
Several restaurants line State Fair Boulevard through Lakeland, but residents have to venture beyond the neighborhood for more amenities. On the boulevard itself, Bella Bakery serves up fresh delights alongside Johnny Mac’s Pizzeria & Deli, and the nearby Wally’s Belvedere offers a bar-and-grill atmosphere. “Fair Deli Craft Beer is in Lakeland, and people love it,” Cleveland says. “They’re known for their Reuben sandwiches and people come there all the time for that.” For groceries, shoppers can head to a nearby Wegmans or to the Nichols Supermarket across the lake, which has operated for three generations. “There’s great food and restaurants within five to 10 minutes of Lakeland,” Hodgkins says. “There’s more in downtown Syracuse and Camillus. People will go to Camillus for retail and groceries.” On the lake’s southeastern shores, Destiny USA serves as the biggest shopping mall in the entire state. The mall has local and national retail shops, restaurants, entertainment options and even small amusement outlets; some establishments there include a LEGO Store, a laser tag center, a Vans store and more.

Homes branching off State Fair Boulevard
Lakeland homes are almost exclusively situated in the neighborhood’s northern half, though a few can be found to the south near the interchange of Routes 5 and 695. Single-family pricing typically ranges from around $200,000 to about $300,000. “There’s some neighborhoods where every other house is different,” Cleveland says. Lakeland exemplifies that trait, as architectural styles range from ranch-style houses to colonial-inspired homes to split-levels, with some Cape Cods mixed in as well. Homes don’t typically have sidewalks out front, but do usually sit on lots with front and back lawns. Older homes, some dating to the 1910s, are harder to find and often sit on State Fair Boulevard, while the rest of the housing mostly dates from the 1950s through the 1980s. There aren’t any lakefront residences, as Interstate 695 separates the residential area from the water. Lakeland receives a CAP crime score of 2 out of 10, below the national average of 4.

A state fair staple
The New York State Fair takes place every year at the Fairgrounds in the southern portion of Lakeland, and it has drawn over a million visitors on multiple occasions. The venue is within just over a mile of the boulevard, featuring vendors, amusement rides, live performances and more during its annual 13-day run in late summer. On Lakeview Point, the Empower FCU Amphitheater showcases concerts throughout the year, and across the waters of Onondaga Lake, the Salt Museum celebrates the industry that defined the area more than a century ago. Salt springs on the edge of the lake put Syracuse on the map in their heyday.

Convenience via Interstate 690
Interstate 690 runs parallel with State Fair Boulevard and the shores of Onondaga Lake, sitting between the two and passing through Syracuse as it heads east. Near the center of Lakeland, 690 meets with Route 695, which branches off to the south towards Camillus. Interstate 90, which spans the United States, curves north of the lake. “It’s about 15 minutes to the airport,” Hodgkins says. “In that area, everything’s 10-15 minutes away.” The Syracuse Hancock International Airport is serviced by nearly a dozen commercial airlines that reach up and down the East Coast and as far west as Las Vegas. Centro buses chug along the boulevard, Milton Avenue and other nearby streets for public transport.
Public transportation runs all the way down State Fair Blvd, starting at the edge of Lakeland.
Lakeland is a small town on the west shore of Onondaga Lake, from which it gets its name.
