History flows like spring water in downtown Georgetown
Located 15 miles north of Lexington in the Bluegrass region of central Kentucky, people have long gravitated toward Georgetown’s Royal Spring. Originally inhabited by the Shawnee, Reverend Elijah Craig settled his congregation there in the 1780s. As legend has it, Craig distilled the first batches of bourbon using water from Royal Spring, right in what is now downtown. But change proceeds as surely as spring water, and now the neighborhood offers not only historic landmarks and the Georgetown & Scott County Museum but also an array of local eateries and shops. “There’s a really good mix of new people and generational Georgetownians,” Kristine Cassata, Founder and Realtor at Indigo & Co Realty, says.

Living history and community spirit
Residents revisit local history at Royal Spring Park, which still serves as a municipal water source, as well as once powering the first paper and pulling mills west of the Alleghany. Visitors can explore two historic cabins, one built by Milton Leach, a former enslaved man. At Robert Lonnie Suffoletta Memorial Park, neighbors take in games of the Scott County Youth Baseball league at one of several fields, play on the playground or picnic at the shelter. Evans Orchard & Cider Mill is nearby, where people explore a fifth-generation farm, pick fruit and flowers, sample cider or make new animal friends at the Barn Yard Petting Zoo.

Local businesses thrive on Main Street
Local businesses line downtown Georgetown’s vibrant Main Street. Cassata recommends Maime’s Fine Wine & Gifts for their expansive bourbon selection, including some hard-to-find bottles. Other favorites are Galvin’s, a “tried and true sports bar that people love,” Cassata says. Desserts by Rebecca offers coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and of course, desserts, along with cake-decorating classes. Residents can savor craft cocktails and farm-to-table dishes at Local Feed or enjoy a pint at Slainte Public House, an Irish pub with frequent live music. For groceries, Kroger and Aldi are less than 3 miles down U.S. Route 25.
A local favorite, Fava’s Restaurant, boasts quaint small-town character.

Celebrating Kentucky horse culture
“The standout event of the year is the Festival of the Horse,” says Dylan Marson, a local resident and the Communications Manager for Georgetown/Scott County Tourism. Each year in September, the Festival draws “25,000 to 30,000 attendees for the weekend,” Marson says. Nearby, the Keeneland Raceway holds horseraces in April and October. “Everyone knows about the Kentucky Derby, but Keeneland is the go-to around here for racegoers and any who appreciate horse culture here,” Marson says. Make-A-Wish Day at Evans Orchard, another annual event, brings together families from Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
Festival of the Horse features live music, vendors, and the largest parade in the county.
