One of the Grand Strand’s oldest seaside neighborhoods
DeBordieu Colony has the distinction of being one of the oldest beachside communities on the East Coast. Its name comes from the story of Marquis de Lafayette docking on the shore in 1777 and declaring “This land is so beautiful; it must be the borderland of God!” – or “D’aborde Dieu” in Lafayette’s native French. Today, the 400-year-old area has turned into an exclusive gated community with vested interest in preserving the region’s natural beauty. The neighborhood is built alongside the Hobcaw Barony, a 16,000-acre former rice plantation that is now a sprawling nature reserve. DeBordieu works to keep its private beach clean and its native wildlife healthy with frequent cleanup efforts and limitations on commercial buildings. The result is sparkling waters and acres of towering live oaks that invoke the Grand Strand of centuries ago. “It’s a very exclusive, coastal, Southern experience,” says Suzanne Temple, who has worked on the Grand Strand for over a decade as the owner of Tidelife Vacation Rental and a Realtor with Re/Max Executive. “You’re going to experience things the way it used to be on the coast of South Carolina.”
DeBordieu Beach is carefully preserved
Designed with nature in mind, DeBordieu Colony is surrounded by hundreds of acres of wildlife preserve and the private DeBordieu Beach. It also has amenities like a beach clubhouse, tennis court and golf course. Blanche Brown, the community’s executive manager, oversees a comprehensive coastal preservation plan that includes a beach renourishment strategy to bring in new sand every few years when the old sand naturally erodes. Right off the beach, the local creek connects to the North Inlet, allowing boaters to easily reach the inlet’s prime fishing areas. The Hobcaw Barony surrounds the North Inlet where visitors can view the reserve’s live oaks, nicknamed “the friendliest woods in the world” by philanthropist Bella Bauch. Coastal flooding is common in the area, so there are water-level sensors near the inlet's fishing stations for added safety.

DeBordieu Colony’s coveted Fourth of July celebration

The festivities kick off with a parade and continue into the evening with a buffet and fireworks show. Other signature events include environment-focused festivities, like the Annual Beach Sweep and the DeBordieu 5K Run, which is a fundraiser for the South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts. The community’s award-winning golf course also hosts a yearly golf tournament that benefits local police officers and first responders.
From tile roofs to turrets, DeBordieu Colony's homes offer variety
DeBordieu’s more than 1,200 beach homes have varying designs, from colonials to Cape Cods with pitched roofs, dormer windows and columns, to Spanish and French influences with tile roofs and turrets. Homes of all styles have signature beach house features, including large decks, screen porches, and private docks and boat ramps. A property under 3,000 square feet usually costs between $1 million and $2 million, while a larger home can sell for $2 million to $4 million. There are also smaller villas and cottages available for rent or part-time ownership, which usually cost between $950,000 to $1 million. “If you’re interested but not sure it’s where you want to end up, you can get a rental to try it out first,” Temple says. “Come stay for a weekend, because once you do, you’re hooked.” The entire neighborhood is easy to traverse, with plenty of walking paths and flat streets shared by golf carts, pedestrians and cars. DeBordieu also has a desirable CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average score of 4.
