History along the coast
Lifelong locals and young families gather in Greenwich Township, a coastal neighborhood along the Delaware River where places like Fort Billingsport Park and the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse give residents an opportunity to experience the coast and the history of the community. “There’s only a small portion of the water here open to the public. The rest has been taken over by the oil refineries and warehouses,” says Sandra Birch, a local who was born and raised in Greenwich Township. “We have problems like every other town. But so many of us were born here and won’t move because it’s our home and we love it. We’ve also got lots of young people moving in with their families because the houses here are affordable.”
Older, well-kept homes
Colorful Victorian homes and colonial revivals line up next to American foursquare homes and gothic revivals on small green lots connected by sidewalks. Home prices range from $160,000 to $375,000. On average, homes in Greenwich Township sell after 30 days on the market compared to the national average of 39 days. “Most of the homes here are older. My house was built in 1917 and I’ve lived in it for 58 years,” Birch says. “But even though it’s an older community, the houses are well kept.” Homes can be anywhere from 980 to 3,320 square feet with lots between 3,700 square feet and 0.70 acres.
