Relaxed living with highly rated schools and quick commutes

Located in the quiet, forested middle of Glastonbury, East Glastonbury Center offers relaxed suburban living among the woods while still being a quick drive to the town's amenities. Glastonbury's highly rated school district and quick commutes to Hartford, paired with the neighborhood's large lot sizes and well-kept single-family homes, make East Glastonbury Center popular among families and others looking for room to spread out. "People love the diversity of the area, where you can have rural areas that aren't far from shops and dining," says Kadji Anderson, lifetime resident of Glastonbury and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway New England Properties. "I have always loved the open space, and even though it's a big town, you still know everybody and have that small-town feel."

Suburban housing options in winding subdivisions

Many of the suburban homes in the neighborhood were built between the 1950s and '90s, with common styles including Colonial Revivals, split-levels and ranches. Most houses have attached two-car garages and sit in winding subdivisions. However, plentiful trees and lot sizes that are commonly more than an acre offer privacy between residences. The median house price in East Glastonbury Center is $585,000. A handful of larger homes built between the 2000s and today can sell for over $1 million, representing the neighborhood's highest price point. On the lower end, townhouses like the ones in the Georgetown Village subdivision usually cost between $300,000 and $400,000.

Glastonbury's schools earn high marks

Students in the neighborhood may begin at Hopewell Elementary School, which earns an A grade from Niche. Children typically progress to A-rated Smith Middle School and A-plus-rated Glastonbury High School. "Glastonbury is known for its school system. We spend 63% of our tax base on education," says Harry Finer, Glastonbury local and Realtor at William Raveis Real Estate. Niche ranked Glastonbury High School the third-best school in Connecticut for athletes. The school's Girls Cross Country and Track & Field teams have earned nearly two dozen state championships since 2004.

Hiking at Hollister Preserve and J.B. Williams Park

Hollister Preserve has natural trails through the woods and along Smith Brook. Hikers can trek to certain spots for views across the Connecticut River Valley to the Hartford skyline in the distance. Just across Route 2, J.B. Williams Park has more wooded hiking spaces for visitors. There's also a playground and pavilion available for rentals. In addition to designated parks, the town has undeveloped land that contributes to the quiet, natural atmosphere. "There are some places where there's trails. Others are either farmland or protected. There's just a lot of natural space," Finer says.

Locally owned farms and dining in Glastonbury Center

Scott's Orchard and Nursery is in the neighborhood and one of several farmstands in Glastonbury. Scott's seasonal offerings include fresh-cut Christmas trees in the winter and pick-your-own peaches and blueberries in the summer. Nearby off Woodland Street, Cavanna's Farm has cut-your-own Christmas trees, pick-your-own produce and a fully operational train to tote visitors across the property. "The son of the owner decided to build his own railroad. He takes people on [the train] to go picking on the farm," Finer says. "When he first opened, he blew the train whistle. On Facebook, all kinds of people were confused, saying they heard a train whistle in town." For everyday errands, locals drive to Glastonbury Center, which has a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Popular restaurants in the center also include Giovanni's Brick Oven Pizzeria and Ken's Corner Breakfast & Lunch, a staple for waffles and classic breakfast platters.

This weekend-long event also has a 5K road race and an extensive lineup of musical performances and entertainers.
