An east Glendale neighborhood close to freeways and shopping
Somerset is a primarily residential neighborhood in the City of Glendale, about 7 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles. The neighborhood is adjacent to state Route 2 on the east, and state Route 134 is close, to the north, making commutes and travel convenient. There's no need to go far, though, as plenty of places to shop and dine out are nearby. "Honestly, if someone comes from a busy place and wants to live a busy life, they will. There's a lot in the area," says Adel Hamad, a real estate agent with Lifetime Realty & Investment.
Early 20th-century homes, 1970s condominiums
Palms and other trees, hedges and flowering shrubs add to the scenery along residential streets with sidewalks. Some areas have views of the Verdugo Mountains to the north. Many homes have a driveway and garage, but street parking is also used. Somerset has a substantial supply of multiunit properties; apartments make up more than half of the residential footprint. Spanish-inspired and traditional-style homes are common; many date to the early 20th century. In the 12 months before March 2025, single-family home prices ranged from the mid $800,000s to $1.2 million. Condominiums, many of which date to the 1970s, are in the $400,000s to $600,000s. "In Glendale, the properties tend to hold their value very well, and rental demand is high too," Hamad says.
East Colorado Street shopping centers, 2 miles to malls
Verdugo Produce & Deli, in the heart of Somerset, has pantry items, Armenian imports and hot meals. On the north end of Somerset, off East Colorado Street, there's a Ralphs for groceries. Across the street, Arko Foods Market specializes in Filipino cuisine. Colorado Street has shopping centers in both directions. Scarantino's Italian Inn, established in 1967, uses many family recipes. Zankou Chicken, a regional chain with kabobs, pita wraps and rotisserie chicken, is named after a river in Armenia. Major shopping spots are about 2 miles northwest of the neighborhood. The Americana at Brand has more than 75 businesses and a movie theater, and the Glendale Galleria has over 200 shops and restaurants.
Windsor Mini Park is in Somerset; Carr Park is nearby
Windsor Mini Park has a playground and picnic tables and is frequently visited by students from Muir Elementary School, which is a couple of blocks away. Northeast of the neighborhood is the considerably larger Carr Park, with plenty of shade trees and a playground. From Somerset, it's about 5 miles to Griffith Park, which includes the Los Angeles Zoo, the Griffith Park Observatory, golf courses, trails and gardens. Dodger Stadium is about 7 miles to the south.
Muir Elementary, Wilson Middle and Glendale High
John Muir Elementary School earns a B-plus grade from Niche and is an International Spanish Academy School affiliated with the Ministry of Education of Spain. Woodrow Wilson Middle School receives a B, and Glendale High School has a B-plus. Wilson and Glendale participate in the Armenian Language Immersion Program; the high school also offers Spanish immersion. Additionally, the district has magnet schools.
Beeline and Metro buses, the GTC and a nearby hospital
Somerset has stops for Beeline Bus and LA Metro buses on South Chevy Chase Drive and East Colorado Street. For Metrolink rail, Amtrak and Greyhound service, the Glendale Transportation Center (GTC) is a couple of miles away. The GTC has 300 parking spaces. Though proximity to two freeways can be a plus, people living on the east side of Somerset, closest to SR-2, may experience noise issues. North of Somerset, on the other side of SR-134, is the medical facility Adventist Health Glendale. The Hollywood Burbank Airport is about 10 miles northwest of Somerset.
Farmers markets and events like a 10K and Cruise Night
Glendale has a variety of events throughout the year. The Verdugo Mountains 10K Trail Run & Hike is in May, the Cruise Night is in July, and the Armenian American Museum Festival is in October. The Glendale Central Library hosts the Glendale Día de los Muertos in November. Farmers markets within several miles of Somerset include the Glendale Gateway Certified Farmers Market, on Tuesdays, and the Atwater Village Farmers Market, on Sundays.
