A quiet suburb near shopping and highways
The village of Glendale Heights, about 30 miles west of downtown Chicago, bears its name for fitting reasons. Glendale blends two of the area’s geographic neighbors, Glen Ellyn to the south and Bloomingdale to the north. Heights reflects the unique topography of the suburb as its elevation is a bit higher than those of the communities to the east. This slight altitude doesn’t stop Glendale Heights from offering plenty of shopping centers and commercial businesses, with easily accessible highways in and out. "It’s a great location to pretty much anywhere with the interstates all around. We have a good number of commuters that drive into the city on 290,” says Tracy Tran, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty with 16 years of experience in Glendale Heights.

Sidewalks leading to Split levels and townhomes
The residential streets stay quiet, and sidewalks and driveways keep the roads free of congestion. "Glendale Heights is great for first-time home buyers because of the affordable homes," says Josie Morrison, Broker Associate with RE/MAX Action. "There's a good diversity of styles, and the village is centrally located in the Chicagoland area." On the lower end, 1,000- to 1,500-square-foot condos and townhomes can be found for around $150,000 to $250,000. A bit larger 1,500- to 2,000-square-foot single-family dwellings – such as raised ranch, Split level and modern traditional – typically range between $300,000 and $500,000.
Town houses are also available in the Glendale Lakes subdivision.

A-plus graded Glenbard High School
Students living in Glendale Heights can begin at Glen Hill Elementary School, which receives a B-minus Niche grade. They can advance to Glenside Middle School, which Niche grades a B and ranks in the top half of best public middle schools in Illinois. Students can finish their public school education at one of the best high schools – in the top 2% – in the state, according to Niche. Glenbard West High School receives an A-plus Niche grade and is also ranked in the top .5% of high schools for athletes in Illinois. “We’re fortunate to have some really good school districts. Some kids are zoned to Glen Ellyn and some are zoned to Glenbard, and both are great options,” Tran says.

Cruising to Chicago on I-290
Residents can hop onto Interstate 355 on the east side of town, which runs north to south. They can also cruise Interstate 290 for 20 miles to catch a flight at O’Hare Airport or ride for another 10 miles to catch a show in Chicago. Those without vehicles take advantage of the several Pace bus stops dispersed along Glen Ellyn Road.

Big-name shops and Bavarian eats
Locals of Glendale Heights are surrounded by retail along East North Avenue and West Army Trail Road. For big-name shopping, they head to Target and Walmart, and for smaller-scale excursions, they stop at Plaza Westlake or Glendale Square. The community has a selection of smaller grocery markets throughout the village, and more traditional grocers include Tony’s Fresh Market on the south side, Jewel-Osco on the north side and Aldi at both ends. For a hearty Bavarian meal, folks dine at Schnitzel Platz, an old-world German joint with liter beers and live entertainment on the weekends. Next door, Ki’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant is a chill chophouse with a patio and scenic grounds, which include a flower garden and a petting zoo.

Adventures year round at Camera Park
Families frequent Camera Park, where the playground, skate park and disc golf course keep all ages busy. “My kids love playing on the soccer fields there,” Tran adds. “And they put on a Fourth of July fireworks every year.” This park also hosts live music performances, community garage sales and the Glendale Heights Fest every summer. Four-legged friends enjoy running free through East Branch Forest Preserve, an off-leash dog park with fishing coves. To the west is Glendale Lakes Golf Club, an 18-hole public golf course owned and operated by the village.

Making a splash at the Aquatic Center
For the town’s athletes, old and young, Glendale Heights Sports Hub – known colloquially as The Hub – is a recreational facility comprised of gyms, fitness studios, an indoor playground and an indoor turf field. Outside The Hub is the Glendale Heights Aquatic Center, which causes a big splash during the warmer months. The pool, water slides, splash pad, and surf simulator keep visitors cool all summer. For emergencies and dependable care, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth GlenOaks is conveniently located on the east side of town.
