Rural living in western Wisconsin
Not to be confused with Glenwood City, the western Wisconsin suburb of Glenwood has its own town hall and a population of around 800, right outside of its more metropolitan counterpart. Known for its back-country roads, farming roots and proximity to the Twin Cities, Glenwood offers residents a rural lifestyle with a thriving outdoor scene. “It’s a small-town community,” says Brent Wernlund, Realtor with Edina Realty. “Residents here take pride in having easy access to their own grocery store and smaller graduation classes of less than 100 people.” Local mainstays like Nilssen’s Foods and the annual St. Croix County Fair play a role in maintaining a larger sense of community. “Everybody’s looking out for one another, and it’s nice to see familiar faces when you’re out and about,” says John Lindelof, Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty. And with easy access to U.S. Interstate 94 to the south, commutes into the Twin Cities are accessible within 60 miles or around an hour’s drive.

The real estate market in Glenwood is competitive due to limited inventory, ample acreage and proximity to Glenwood City. “It’s one of the more desirable areas in St. Croix County,” says Wernlund, who has been selling in the area for over 46 years. “The market is made up of rural properties with active farming land.” With an average sales price of $180,000, homes in Glenwood cost around $200,000 less than the average property in the Minneapolis Metro Area. The median lot size in Glenwood is also larger, averaging around 14,000 square feet, or double what most properties average in Minneapolis. The majority of homes in Glenwood date back to the 1950s and boast designs from this era. Prairie styles are common in the neighborhood, with the occasional Tudor or ranch-style mixed in.
