Gloucester housing with Annisquam River access
Just to the north of downtown Gloucester lies Riverview, a primarily suburban neighborhood known for its housing options alongside the Annisquam River. Here, Wheeler Street is the main thoroughfare for the community, branching off into several neighborhoods with New Englander and Cape Cod-style houses, some of which sport private docks and waterfront views. The community also enjoys access to local amenities, and Gloucester’s only hospital and two middle schools are a short distance away. Dining and public transportation options are less than 2 miles away in the downtown area. “People typically end up in that part of Gloucester because the river is such a big draw to the area,” says Rick Marshall, vice president at J Barret & Company and lifetime resident of the Gloucester area. “It’s one of the more sought after places due to the sunset views in the west.”

Cape Cods and larger homes with private docks
Riverview is a primarily residential area with a variety of housing options. Cape Cods and New Englander-inspired homes make up much of the market, and many were constructed between the early and late 1900s. Homes are often placed on smaller lots with modest yards, and many offer access to the water or attractive views. Many properties also include driveways or garages which minimizes street parking. Prices for homes in the community can range between $500,000 and $700,000, but larger homes with waterfront access often run between $1 million and $2 million. “Price tags tend to be higher in the area, especially for homes that have deep water docks during low tide,” Marshall says.

Boat ramps, beaches, and Pole Hill
The Riverview community, true to its name, offers many recreation options that make use of the Annisquam River. While many homes have private docks, boat owners who don’t live on the waterfront can take their boats to Corliss Landing for water access. Just across the water from the neighborhood, residents can also head to Wingaersheek Beach, which Marshall says is one of the jewels of the community, along with the Annisquam River. For hikes and strolls, residents can also explore the trails on Pole Hill, located in the center of the neighborhood.

Nearby grocery options include the Gloucester Variety store closer to the neighborhood and the Shaw’s in the downtown area.
