Rural southwest Oregon community focused on the outdoors
Located 14 miles north of downtown Gold Beach, Oregon, the secluded coastal community of Ophir offers privacy and access to the Pacific Ocean. “It’s all about the views here,” says Amber Hughes, webmaster for local tourism website, GoldBeachOregon.com and former resident of Gold Beach for 20 years. “And a lot of charm about the area is the outdoor activities.” U.S. Route 101—also known as the Oregon Coast Highway—travels north-south through the area, giving views of dense, green forestland in the east, vivid blue waters in the west and pockets of flat, open grassy landscape. Locals here enjoy strolling the beach looking for rocks, checking out nearby hiking trails and occasionally venturing to closer to city center for annual events and celebrations.

Hanging at the beach and traveling north for hiking at Humbug State Park
Ophir has about 4 miles of beach coastline to enjoy. Folks can walk along the mocha-brown sand—mostly caused by heavy minerals washing up to shore from nearby rivers like the Rogue—and pass piles of driftwood and sand dune with jagged rock formations in the distance. The Honey Bear by the Sea RV Resort and Campground is a popular weekend getaway spot featuring 42 full hook-up RV sites, a small pond area surrounded by pine trees and several dirt-packed trails for bikers of all levels. Residents can practice their swings at the public, 9-hole Cedar Bend Golf Course along the neighborhood’s border. Eleven miles north, Humbug Mountain State Park offers year-round camping with 39 electrical sites for RVs and a nearly 6-mile hiking trail through the mossy, rock-filled Willamette National Forest with killer views of the distant turquoise ocean.

Large lots and oceanfront homes in Ophir
Most single-family homes in Ophir are set on spacious lots near its southern border. Some sit along the coast; narrow dirt and gravel roads branch off the paved two-way Ophir Road and Cedar Valley Drive dotted with ponderosa pine and fir trees. Late 20th-century manufactured homes with vinyl siding and small front porches sit on multi-acre lots with space for RV parking. Typically ranging between $300,000 and $500,000, some of these properties are viewed as house-flipping opportunities. Hidden by towering pine trees, early 2000s custom-built new traditional homes with gabled roofs and cement siding sit closer to the beachfront, with views of the Pacific. “If you can see the ocean at all, then you’re not gonna find anything under $500,000,” says Kristina Ringer, Realtor for Southern Oregon Roots Realty and longtime Gold Beach resident. These one to two-story homes feature wide wooden decks, two-car garages and a price range of around $750,000 and $1.1 million.

In July, locals can travel 10 miles south to the four-day-long Curry County Fairgrounds to enjoy magic shows, massive corn dogs and bull riding events overlooking the ocean.
Picking up groceries at McKay’s Market downtown
For groceries, Nesika Beach Market is a 3-mile drive south selling snacks and burgers from its in-store deli counter. McKay’s Market is another go-to spot for fresh fruit and vegetables 7 miles south in downtown Gold Beach. A few blocks north, Rogue River Myrtlewood sells hand-crafted wooden bowls and wall décor, and people can shop for lanterns and fishing tackles at the Rogue Outdoor Store. Risk of tsunamis near Ophir
While hurricanes don’t hit the Oregon Coast, underwater earthquakes can cause tsunamis in the area. The Great Tohoku Japan Earthquake in 2011 shifted a massive tsunami toward the coast, triggering major damage to docked boats and small businesses on land. For several years after, debris from the swell washed up on shore, including a 66-foot-long floating dock from Japan, which took about a week to remove. Today, Curry County uses a siren system to warn residents of any incoming tsunamis, and people can find evacuation maps on the county’s main website. Many residents may also keep a 72-hour first-aid kit in their homes and vehicles to have during these emergencies.
