Small southwestern Oregon neighborhood surround by the Pacific
Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and Oregon’s Rogue River estuary, the small, coastal community of Wedderburn is close to local shopping and outdoor sights. “You’ve got the best of both worlds with the river and beach there. It’s why I stay here,” says Ruth Dixon, lead manager for the Gold Beach Visitor’s Center and lifelong resident of Gold Beach. Tourism is an economic engine for the area, and sport fishing and crabbing are major draws. Driving through the area on U.S. Highway 101, rows of oceanfront homes with a bright blue water background come into view in the west, and hilly, ponderosa pine-covered forests are visible to the east. Dixon says people move here for the temperate climate and private lifestyle due to the greater distance between most homes. But even people who value quiet can get involved. “If you’re willing to get out into the community and say, ‘hey, I’m new here,’ they’re willing to accept you,” she says.

Walks on the beach and hikes in Otter Point
About a mile of beach stretches across Wedderburn’s western border. Residents can stroll along the ashy-colored sand past piles of driftwood toward the secluded North Bailey Beach, where visitors search for pebbles and seashells. Half a mile further north, the 121-acre Otter Point State Recreation Site has hiking trails along rocky sandstone bluffs. The trails have stunning views of the jutting rock formations in the bright, teal-blue Pacific Ocean waters. For more water activities, Port of Gold Beach marina is about a mile south. Anglers can undock their boats and venture onto the Rogue River estuary to catch rainbow trout or Chinook salmon. Further inland, Curry Public Library is a welcoming spot to take a break from the sun, offering occasional teen movie nights and weekly story times for kids.

Variety of single-family homes not far from the water in Wedderburn
Single-family homes in Wedderburn are set on hilly, grassy lots mostly near the center of the neighborhood. Near these lots, paved, sidewalk-less streets loop around homes and lead out to the two-way Old Coast Highway. Midcentury ranch-style homes with long front porches and one-car garages sit on grass and mulch landscaped lawns, some with space for RV parking. These houses sit close together along paved, residential streets with gated backyards and wooden sheds. Prices range between $300,000 and $450,000. Closer to the beach shore are late 20th-century ranch-style and two-story new traditional homes with wood siding and raised foundations. Often rented out as vacation homes in the warmer months, these properties feature asphalt driveways and multiple balconies with ocean views. Waterfront homes typically cost between $700,000 and $1 million.

Chance of wave swells in the Wedderburn area
While hurricanes don’t hit the Oregon coast, underwater earthquakes can stimulate tsunamis in the area. In March of 2011, the Great Tohoku Japan Earthquake shifted a large tsunami toward the coast, causing significant damage to docked boats and small businesses. To keep residents prepared, Curry County uses a siren to notify residents of incoming tsunamis, and people can find evacuation maps on the county’s main website. Many locals keep a 72-hour first-aid kit in their homes and vehicles for emergencies.
