Golden-area neighborhood with its own mountain peak
Lookout Mountain rises more than 7,300 feet, like a looming giant in the northern edge of the neighborhood that bears its name. The mountain beckons outdoor enthusiasts and the curious alike to its breathtaking views of downtown Denver and nearby Golden. The neighborhood also touches the eastern side of Genesee and has an interstate bisect its middle. “Homeowners here love the ability to live with nature and still be about 16 miles from downtown Denver,” says Todd L. Crosbie, Golden Real Estate Advisor with LIV Sotheby’s International Realty who has over 25 years of experience. Hikers and bikers have their pick of trails within the surrounding national parks and open spaces, and million-dollar homes feature Rocky Mountain views. Residents participate in annual Wild West celebrations and trek up to William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s gravesite at the top of the mountain. Families typically live here long-term, with access to highly rated schools and remote jobs.

Mountain trails, cycling races and nature programs
Lookout Mountain is the setting for road cycling races like the annual Racer X Cycling’s Hill Climb, and year-round hiking. It’s natural beauty also makes it a destination for couples and families who come to have their pictures taken. Several trails weave throughout the neighborhood, including the Lariat Loop, part of a 40-mile byway. Windy Saddle Park to the north features over 4 miles of multi-use dirt-packed trails; strong winds blow down from the Continental Divide, making this a popular hang gliding and paragliding destination.
Nearby, the 100-acre Lookout Mountain Preserve and Nature Center offers roughly 3 miles of trails and interactive ecosystem exhibits. Annual naturalist-led programs are free, and kids can explore hands-on playrooms. East of the neighborhood, mountain bikers hit up Apex Park’s multi-directional connector trails, which are also open to hikers and horseback riders.
Locals and tourists love to walk around the iconic Red Rocks Park trails in Genesee.

Million-dollar homes with mountain views
Lookout Mountain’s housing landscape consists of midcentury modern, what’s locally known as mountain contemporary architecture and custom-built estates. Dating between the 1950s and the present, these homes are up to 7,000 square feet and typically sit on 1 to 3 acres within groves of pine trees. Most have four to five bedrooms, up to three-car garages, picture windows providing mountain and city views and decks or wrap-around porches. Horses are allowed on many of these properties as well. Prices range from $775,000 to $2.75 million. “One of the great things about Lookout Mountain is that the homeowners association and the county lets you build things like barns on your property,” says Crosbie. "Unlike in Genesee, which has more restrictions. And all power lines are buried in Genesee, and all roads are paved, which isn’t the case for Lookout Mountain.”

All four seasons with lots of snow
Crosbie says the neighborhood sees all four seasons, sometimes all in one day, too. “There’s a joke here that if there’s a snowflake, there’s a snowplow. But if we get under four inches of fluffy snow, the best snow removal tool residents use is a leaf blower.” About 68 inches of snow falls annually here, and the average high in summer is 84 degrees. There is a risk of wildfires and most implement mitigation tactics.
