Gordon Heights is the kind of community many people drive through without realizing they’ve crossed a border. Sandwiched between Middle Island and Coram, it’s been linked to the pair of more recognizable hamlets for years, but it has features of its own that set it apart. “Gordon Heights is beautiful and wooded,” says Robert Bianco, a Realtor and the office manager at Island Advantage Realty. “It’s appealing here because it’s not as developed as Coram and Middle Island. It also happens to be an up-and-coming [area] right now.” With roots as a Black community formed by people who left New York City in the 1920s with the hope of a better life and the chance to own land, the people of Gordon Heights continue to look out for each other. “It’s quiet, neighborly,” says Bill Chavis, an associate broker at Re/Max Signature Real Estate who has sold homes here for about 40 years. “It seems like the people in there watch over the area.”

Large wooded lots or golf course views
“What draws people there these days are there are some larger properties,” Chavis says. “There’s a number of larger properties there, and I think the original setup back in the 1920s was for larger properties.” Whether homeowners want smaller lots or homes with an acre, Gordon Heights has options. Bianco and Chavis also say that the variety of housing available in the hamlet is attractive to homebuyers. Ranch-style, hi-ranch and colonial homes are often found on wooded lots, and there are a few subdivisions like Strathmore on the Green, a gated community that offers residents amenities like a pool, tennis courts and lawn care. It curves around the Spring Lake Golf Club, providing some homes with views of the club’s golfing green — thus the community’s name. There’s also a smattering of new constructions in the area. Although the occasional fixer-upper can dip into the $300,000 range, most homes here cost between $450,000 and $550,000.

20 minutes to local beaches
Middle Country Road, also known as State Route 25, runs along Gordon Heights’ northern border. Aside from this, most of the streets that run through Gordon Heights are smaller, contributing to its overall wooded, residential atmosphere. It still only takes a few minutes, however, to get onto major roads like William Floyd Parkway or Interstate 495, and being almost right at the center of Long Island means that it’s about a 20-minute drive to beaches on both the North Shore and South Shore.
Traditional celebration in Children’s Park
For nearly 100 years, Gordon Heights has held an annual Children’s Parade & Family Celebration in Children’s Park. After a parade, the day-long event features live music, food trucks, local vendors and plenty of games alongside a raffle. The hamlet also has a tree lighting ceremony at the Mott House in nearby Coram where locals munch on gingerbread cookies and warm up with hot cocoa while listening to a local choir and counting down the seconds until the tree lights up.
