Where rural and city life meet on Goshen's eastern edge
East Goshen is a neighborhood where elements of city and country life meet. Residents are just over a mile from Downtown Goshen and an even shorter distance from being surrounded by the farmland that makes up the heart of Northern Indiana’s Amish Country. Two Goshen city parks are also in the neighborhood, adding to the blend of pastoral vibes and city amenities.
State Road 4 is the road most traveled
Indiana State Road 4, also called Lincoln Avenue, forms East Goshen’s backbone, connecting west to the city and east to the country. Troyer Foods, a produce and meat distribution plant with more than 100 employees, is just outside the neighborhood on State Road 4. Goshen Hospital is about 3 miles south of the neighborhood, and Goshen Municipal Airport is about 7 miles to the south.
There are no sidewalks in this heavily car-dependent neighborhood, but there is direct access to the Pumpkinvine Trail. The trail stretches 17 miles northeast from Downtown Goshen to Middlebury and Shipshewana. The trail also meets the Maple City Greenway, which leads 8 miles northwest to Elkhart. “It’s a beloved trail system,” says City of Goshen community relations manager Hannah Scott-Carter.
No shopping or dining options in neighborhood
Despite its relatively small size – the neighborhood has around 500 residents – there are nearly a half-dozen houses of worship in East Goshen, including two Mennonite churches. There are some local small businesses in the neighborhood, but the nearest shopping and dining establishments are in or around Downtown Goshen. Mi Poblanita Supermercado is just outside the neighborhood, and other nearby grocery stores include San Jose Supermarket and Kroger.

Abshire Park is Goshen’s second-biggest park at just over 75 acres. Access to Pumpkinvine Trail is not the park’s only perk. Part of the park is a managed natural area with a restored prairie, wetlands and a forest grove. The Goshen Community Orchard, a community garden, is also in the park. Dykstra Park is a more traditional city park, highlighted by its playground and basketball court in the middle of the neighborhood.
