About 23 miles from Kansas City, Grain Valley is an outlying suburb of the greater Kansas City area. The city was named after the farmlands that surrounded it, and the city’s original residents moved to Grain Valley thanks to a railroad that promised to bring commerce and transportation. Today, Interstate 70 serves a similar purpose for residents and provides access to Kansas City and neighboring Blue Springs, where Grain Valley residents can travel for work and recreation. Kansas City International Airport is about 45 miles away from the city and is the closest international airport. There is no public transportation in Grain Valley. Ride KC, the region’s public transit line, stops in neighboring Blue Springs.
