A tight-knit community of diverse established housing
Eastgate, which features a blend of single-family home styles on quiet residential streets, sprouted up from Michigan farmland after World War II and has transformed into an appealing Grand Rapids neighborhood. Tucked into the south side of the city, residents enjoy relative solitude away from major commuter routes while still being 2 miles from East Grand Rapids’ buzzy lakefront commercial village and 5 miles from downtown. Eastgate is a tight-knit community served by a neighborhood association that regularly sponsors community events.
Array of homes features private driveways, garages and spacious yards
The diverse collection of established housing is anchored by traditional ranch-style homes, many featuring sturdy brick construction. The neighborhood’s contemporary homes, primarily built during the 1980s, feature similar midcentury designs. Multi-level homes include traditional split levels and feature Colonial Revival-style homes with window-heavy brick facades. Midcentury-modern homes, cozy saltbox-style homes and large farmhouse-influenced homes also can be found. The architectural variety adds curb appeal and gives each street a unique look. Regardless of style, standard features include private driveways, garages and spacious yards. Prices typically range from the mid-200,00s to the high 300,000s.

Active neighborhood association keeps residents informed, organizes events
The Eastgate Neighborhood Association was formed in 1990 and has become a key resource for keeping residents informed and connected. The volunteer board consists of up to 10 residents who meet every other month. The annual membership fee of $15 helps cover the cost of producing a quarterly newsletter, The Gatewatch, and organizing events. Those events include block parties, garage sales, community clean-ups and holiday festivities that include Trunk or Treat and a Christmas decoration contest. The association also supports two community gardens. One is at the Fifth Reformed Church and the other is at Beacon Hill, a retirement community centrally located in the neighborhood that has been part of the area since Eastgate's earliest days.

Neighborhood pizza parlor and a quaint village highlight dining and retail options
Andrea’s Pizza is one of the few commercial businesses in the neighborhood and its lone eatery. A local institution, the family owned restaurant has been serving up Italian favorites for more than 50 years. Residents will find a concentration of retail and dining options at the nearby Breton Village shopping center, which is anchored by several clothing stores and provides one-stop grocery shopping at D&W Fresh Market. Condado Tacos, which puts a modern twist on traditional Mexican dishes, and Morning Belle, a contemporary breakfast restaurant, are popular dining destinations. Gaslight Village, a trendy, walkable district on the shores of Reeds Lake only 2 miles to the north is home to must-try Grand Rapids restaurants that include Rose’s, a quaint family run lakefront eatery that traces its roots to the turn of the 20th century, and Bowdie’s Chophouse, a highly rated upscale restaurant.
Relatively easy access to buzzy lakefront and downtown despite secluded location

Heading west, it connects to State Route 131 about 3 miles away, and from there, downtown Grand Rapids is less than 2 miles directly north. The winner of last year’s judging took home $125,000 for a massive building mural.
