Convenience and community
Some of the city's best assets are at the fingertips of Midtown residents. Close to college campuses, major employers and great dining spots, this neighborhood is perfect for those wanting a short commute and a friendly community. "It's a very diverse neighborhood in terms of age and demographics. People of every socioeconomic background come together as well," says Dana Eardley, the executive director of the neighborhood's famous Fulton Street Market. Tree-lined sidewalks sit far back from the roads, allowing dog walkers, joggers and bike riders plenty of room to travel to the many shops and parks surrounding the area. Whether living in a short-term rental or setting down roots in a beautiful vintage home, the citizens of Midtown can expect convenience and exploration.
Home to Fulton Street Market
Michigan Street has a small nightlife scene for those wanting a meal or drink out without having to drive the mile to downtown. Those who would instead explore in the morning can head to Madcap Coffee or Stovetop Coffee along Fulton Street. Black Napkin has classic American food like burgers, but they got their start selling popsicles at Fulton Street Market. "They were so successful that they decided to invest in their own location," Eardley says. Locals can pick up groceries for a home-cooked meal at the Family Fare Supermarket. Still, Fulton Street Market is the destination for fresh produce, meats and cheeses. The year-round outdoor market has been operating out of the same location for 102 years and is a staple not only for Midtown but for every neighborhood in Grand Rapids.

Renter-friendly historic homes
American Foursquares from the middle of the century and Queen Anne Victorians from the late 1800s sit at the higher of the scale, occasionally reaching $450,000. Many homes, some over 150 years old, have been well-maintained and updated for modern living without sacrificing their historic charm. "The large homes are often multiunit buildings that house many of the area's renters," says Dan Steffee, a Realtor with Green Crown Real Estate. Bungalows and workers' cottages are on the rolling hills, selling for as low as $200,000. Lots are tight, and yards are small. Still, driveways are standard, and alleyways run behind a few gridded streets, leading to detached garages. A limited number of condos are available at the neighborhood's northwestern end, selling at around $430,000. Many buyers see the potential and appeal of Midtown, leading to houses lasting less than two weeks on the market.

Sidewalks lead to the local park
Clusters of trees back up the neighborhood's homes, but there are few parks in the area. Instead, residents head to Fuller Park to get active and get some fresh air. "There are sidewalks everywhere, and people are always walking around with their dogs or biking to the park, right next door in Fulton Heights," Steffee says. Walking trails meander between baseball diamonds and fields, and Hillcrest Dog Park is the go-to destination for letting dogs run around and play fetch off-leash. Houseman Field is where many local schools play football. Thanks to the designated areas for the long jump, javelin and shotput, nearby Aquinas College uses it for its track and field program.

Walk, bike or drive to work
Several bus stops dot Midtown Grand Rapids, part of "The Rapid" transportation system. Medical Mile, a strip of hospitals and medical facilities, is within a short walk or bike ride from the neighborhood. However, those who drive to work can hop on Interstate 196 by an onramp in Midtown. A train track runs north of the industrial area in the neighborhood and is susceptible to flooding. 12 miles southeast is Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
