Proximity to downtown Grand Rapids is a big draw
Walkable streets, affordable homes and proximity to all the amenities downtown Grand Rapids offers are just a few reasons the South East End is an ideal neighborhood for first-time buyers who aren’t quite ready to settle in the suburbs. “The location is a huge draw. You're a hop, skip and a jump from Eastown and downtown Grand Rapids, and you're right on the edge of East Grand Rapids, so you get a lot of the amenities without having to pay the high property taxes," says Blake Wilson, a Realtor and co-founder of Real5 who has been selling in the area since 2015. “It’s also an excellent starter home neighborhood. I take a lot of my first-time buyers there to start looking.”
Affordable homes are another draw
The home styles vary throughout the neighborhood, mixing bungalows with Craftsman influences, Minimal Traditional builds, Cape Cods, American Foursquares and even a Saltbox or two. They sit snugly on compact lots, with grassy front yards dotted by trees. Most homes have detached garages tucked away in backyards, but there are driveways and wide streets for those that don't. Sidewalks are plentiful around the neighborhood, allowing residents to walk to nearby schools and parks. Prices range from $173,000 for 1,100 square feet to $630,000 for 3,000 square feet.

Mulick Parks offers many amenities
Residents head to Cambridge Park (also known as “Tower Park” by many residents thanks to the large, silver water tower located there) when they want fresh air and exercise for themselves or their canine companions. “A lot of locals bring their dogs and let them run around, which is really nice,” Wilson says. Mulick Park, another neighborhood green space, offers a brightly colored playground and splash pad that buzzes with activity in the summer and a big hill perfect for sledding in the winter.
