Long before he became the nation’s 33rd President, Harry S. Truman lived and worked on his family’s 600-acre farm in Grandview, Missouri. While historic pride is undoubtedly an important element of this small city, its modern amenities have made it one of the fastest-growing places in Jackson County. Mere minutes from Kansas City’s core, Grandview boasts 200 acres of parkland, a lively downtown district and reasonably priced homes. “People are moving here to get out of the city without being too far removed,” says Justin Rufus, owner-broker of Love Living Local, who’s a longtime area resident. “It has a quieter atmosphere, but easy highway access also adds an important factor of convenience.”
Grandview neighborhoods have retro style
The dominant styles in Grandview are 1960s and ‘70s ranch homes and split levels with two-car garages. They typically rest along sidewalk-lined streets with spacious quarter-acre lots adorned with mature oaks and maples that are common to the area.
Home costs here usually range between $200,000 and $300,000. A three-bedroom, one-bath could be found in the low $200,000s, while a four-bedroom, three-bath may cost around $300,000. “The market is just as hot as Kansas City’s,” says Rufus. “Houses are in high demand because they aren’t that old and they’re in good shape, so they’re selling quickly.”

Truman’s Marketplace serves as a shopping hub
Along Grandview’s Main Street, residents can enjoy a plethora of locally owned eateries. The Corner is the go-to spot for Mexican classics, like flavorful birria tacos and deep-fried gorditas. The quaint Housewife bistro serves up coffee and hearty breakfast staples, such as the croissant breakfast sandwich piled high with egg, bacon, and basil pesto. The thoroughfare also beams with a stunning light display during the Christmas season.
There are more commercial options at the Truman’s Marketplace shopping center on U.S. Highway 71. Locals can pick up groceries at Price Chopper, buy a new outfit at T.J. Maxx or grab a quick bite from nationally known eateries, including Chipotle and Whataburger.

Enjoy the outdoors at John Anderson Park
Grandview’s active parks and recreation department manages 14 parks in the area, all offering unique outdoor fun. “The amount of green space in Grandview is another really great benefit of moving away from Kansas City,” says Rufus.
Residents can head to John Anderson Park, to cool off at the splash pad or practice their serve on the pickleball courts. Meadowmere Park has winding paved walking trails, a small skatepark and a whimsical playground filled with treehouses and oversized mushroom stools. At Valley Park, local kids can conquer the towering rope structures, glide down the 55-foot-long metal slide or fly down the zipline. Four-legged children will especially love running around the Tails & Trails Dog Park obstacle course.
Grandview Amphitheater offers much more than music
Another community hub is the Grandview Amphitheater. Not only does the venue host concerts from local musicians, but it’s also the location of the Grandview Farmer’s Market. Every Saturday from June through September, residents can buy freshly baked pastries, handmade home décor and locally sourced produce. Zumba classes and free movie nights under the stars regularly take place here too. And with an easy 17-mile drive north on U.S. Highway 71, entertainment on a larger scale awaits in Kansas City.
