While the world may know Green Bay for its championship football team, locals know it as an intimate community where residents tend to get to know one another. Wisconsin’s oldest city prioritizes a community-oriented locale over high-reaching skyscrapers, bolstered by its affinity for cheese and Packers green and gold. “The people in Green Bay are well-educated, helpful and have a lot of home pride,” says Cheryl Williams, local and president of the MacArthur Heights subdivision. “The city is very active and you never see neighborhoods falling apart. If your garage door is falling off, the city is on it.” Once referred to as the “Toilet Paper Capital of the World,” paper mills employ many of the city's 100,000 residents, alongside other large industries like manufacturing, insurance and healthcare. Some of the city’s top employers include Bellin Health, Schneider and Humana.

Lambeau Field traditions and downtown events
The Packers are the beating heart of the city. From the traditions of the Lambeau Leap after a touchdown to the enthusiasm of the 81,000 cheeseheads that fill the seats of Lambeau Field, the Packers are a one-of-a-kind fanbase. “People all over the world come to see a Packers game,” says Mike Beerntsen, a local resident and owner of Beerntsen’s Candies. “From England, Germany and so on.” During the off-season, Green Bay becomes a city of markets, with Farmer's Market on Broadway to Saturday Farmers Market held downtown garnering large weekly turnouts. Downtown also keeps residents busy with year-round events like ArtFest and CityDeck's Fridays on the Fox. Locals can also learn about the area's history at Neville Public Museum or catch shows at Meyer Theatre, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places.

From community parks to Bay Beach Amusement Park rides
The city provides plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors across its 69 maintained community parks. Bayside recreational opportunities are also abundant, whether it's biking the Fox River State Recreational Trail or catching views from the Ferris wheel at Bay Beach Amusement Park. Other notable attractions include the neighboring Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary and Green Bay Botanical Gardens on the city’s western side, which houses more than 120,000 plants.

Green Bay's homes date back more than 100 years
Green Bay’s median home price is $280,000, which falls below the national average. Early 1900s historic districts like Astor and Downtown sit back from the river and contain the city’s oldest homes. Later years brought Mather Heights, Joannes Park and several other mid-to-late-20th-century neighborhoods, which cover the bulk of the city’s housing market. Those interested in living close to Lambeau Field can explore the Titletown development. “It looks like an old-fashioned factory district that’s been revitalized. With apartments and all that going up,” Beerntsen says. Lakeside communities like East Shore Drive and Nicolet Drive remain some of the city’s most sought-after with some million-dollar properties on the waterfront.

Broadway District eats and Bay Park Square shopping
Cheese, beer and bratwurst are mainstays across the city and state, with most common game day brews coming from Titletown Brewing Company on the west side. However, downtown Green Bay has plenty of options for grub. Hidden hole-in-the-wall spots and fine dining dot the blocks of Broadway, Adams and Washington Streets. Oneida Street is the hub for Green Bay retail developments. Residents can also shop at Bay Park Square’s 100-plus retailers.
University of Wisconsin's Green Bay campus
Green Bay Area Public School District serves the city and maintains a B rating on Niche, which ranks it as the most diverse school district in the state. “You can do school of choice anywhere in the district, and it’s really easy to do so,” Williams says. Local private options include St. Bernard Catholic School and Norte Dame de la Baie Academy. The University of Wisconsin has a Green Bay campus on Nicolet Drive, which offers 117 undergraduate majors.

Getting around on Interstate 43
Interstates 41 and 43 and State Route 172 encircle the city. The interstate system also connects to Milwaukee, 112 miles to the south. Green Bay Metro Transit offers 11 bus routes across the city for local travel. For those making trips out of the region, Austin Straubel International Airport is just outside the city to the southwest. Quick trips also lead to Bellin Hospital and other medical facilities throughout the city. While there are only a few transit services in Green Bay, Amtrak trains may soon be on the horizon. In late 2023, the city received $500,000 in federal grants to study a proposed route stretching to Milwaukee, alongside expansions to Chicago and the Twin Cities.
Green Bay's crime statistics
