Fisk Addition’s most prominent features are the large, central park at its epicenter and the major high school within walking distance. However, some of its biggest charms are smaller in scale. Drivers on Shawano Avenue may spot a fridge nestled against the neighborhood’s community policing center—the latest in a list of community support initiatives dreamed up by residents. “People go out and buy groceries, so others have fresh produce to make meals,” says Anna Kolb, president of the Fisk Addition Neighborhood Association. “If they’ve made beef stew they’ll put it in smaller containers and freeze it. It’s a great neighborhood addition to help the people of the community, and it’s ‘take what you need.’ We have a lot going on in our little neighborhood that we’re excited and passionate about!”

Colonial Revivals, cottages and multiplexes
Fisk Addition has stood the test of time, with early- to mid-1900s Dutch Colonials Revivals, bungalows and worker’s cottages lining well-worn streets. Several wood-sided multiplexes rounds out the options, each with plenty of driveway space for all residents. Despite its age, the neighborhood is kept in good condition through community involvement. “We hand-deliver our newsletter so we get to know our neighbors one on one, and we all kind of have our own section of the neighborhood so we get to know our neighbors more intimately,” Kolb says. “We also have programs called Adopt a Drain and Adopt a Sidewalk. The first Saturday of every month we collect garbage and try to keep our sidewalks clean, and pick 3 to 4 drains to clear out leaves and such.” Those able to snag an available property will be in the ballpark of $175,000 for a cottage or bungalow to $270,000 for a multifamily investment.

Fisk Park: the centerpiece of the community
All residents are a short walk to Fisk Park’s playground, enclosed shelter and tennis, pickleball, basketball and volleyball courts. Next door is Resch Aquatic Center, the local community pool where kids twist down slides into the water. Like the neighborhood streets, the park is kept in optimal condition by its residents. The Fisk Addition Neighborhood Association applies for grants through Green Bay Neighborhoods, a nonprofit working to empower its communities. “There are a lot of younger families moving in, so upgrading the park equipment is a priority,” Kolb says. “We have a large elderly population as well, some wanting to have more of a fitness facility with pull ups, sit ups, resistance machines. It's also something that the teens can use besides just playing basketball, and we’re looking at converting some of the tennis courts to pickleball too.” Beyond this central option, locals are just under 1 mile to Leicht Memorial Park along the banks of the Fox River.

Arterial roads to downtown Green Bay and beyond
Green Bay is a car-centric city where most neighborhoods are close to a major road leading to important destinations. Shawano Avenue forms Fisk Addition’s south boundary and route to downtown Green Bay and the banks of the Fox River, about 1 mile away. Meanwhile, Oneida Street runs north to south and takes residents to Lambeau. “It’s a blessing and a curse because there’s some walkability within the neighborhood, but also some more physical car traffic on the west side in general,” says Alex Young, a Realtor at Keller Williams Commercial in Green Bay who’s passionate about his city and its communities. “And with the high school there as well, all those are busier roads.” Luckily, more trafficdoesn’t necessarily mean egregious commute times. “If you were to look at a bird's eye view of the city, there are several major highways going in each direction route 172, I-41 and I-43, so it’s no more than 15 to 20 minutes tops anywhere you want to go,” Young says. “We don’t experience traffic much except to and from Lombeau on game day, but it’s still relatively quick. It feels like a small town.”
