An established 55-plus community built around a golf course

Poinciana Place, an established 55-plus community in the Greenacres section of Palm Beach County, offers an affordable option in the competitive southeast Florida market. Housing consists primarily of condominiums built in the 1970s and ‘80s around a recently renovated golf course that does not charge membership fees. Residents also have access to pools, tennis courts and a clubhouse. “The community is not expensive, and it’s clean,” says Elizabeth Stewart, a Realtor with LAER Realty Partners and community resident. “It’s well-maintained and nicely manicured. It affords a country-club lifestyle without country-club prices. That’s the best way to put it.”

Golf, swimming and tennis available to all

Poinciana Golf Club’s 18-hole, executive-style layout winds it way for more than 4,500 yards amid palm trees and water hazards. Playing to a par of 64, it is considered one of the top short courses in the region. It has three par-5s, four par-4s and 11 par-3s. Several condominium buildings have their own swimming pools, but all residents have access to Poinciana Golf Club’s pool, tennis courts and community center, which is a central gathering place. “We have a very active clubhouse,” Stewart says. Arts and crafts, bingo, yoga classes and movies are among the myriad offerings. For the more adventurous, the Pinehurst Mountain Bike Trail is a featured amenity among a sprawling natural space just north of the community that also includes nature trails, an equestrian trail and a boat launch at Okeeheelee Park South. Lake Worth Beach Park on the oceanfront is less than 10 miles away. The community center also hosts musical and comedic performances, and large-scale concerts are held nearby at iThink Financial Amphitheatre, a 20,000-seat venue at the South Florida Fairgrounds.

Condos are prevalent, but townhouses and single-family homes also can be found

One and two-bedroom condos are the most common options, but three-bedroom options also are available. The units are mostly between 850 and 1,500 square feet. Several feature screened-in back porches and golf-course views. Condo prices range from the low $100,000s to the mid-$300,000s. Attached townhouse villas in a subdivision setting feature driveways, attached garages and small yards. Monthly HOA fees for the multi-family housing range from the high $300s to the low $800s, although they mostly fall within the $400-to-$600 range. A collection of single-family homes also can be found. Townhouses and homes typically list in the low $300,000s. A network of paved pathways connects neighbors and provides appealing walkability. The community is far enough inland that flooding is not a factor, but high winds can be damaging, especially during hurricane season.

Mel's Way Bistro offers food, entertainment five days a week

Mel’s Way Bistro is part of the Poinciana Golf Club. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday. Stewart raves about the restaurant, which she says might be the community’s biggest draw. “The restaurant is open to the public, and they run a tight ship,” she says. “They have early entertainment, so you can have a bite to eat, dance and be back home by 10.” For those who’d rather venture out for a bite to eat, dining options are concentrated along Lake Worth Road. Gloria Pino, a real estate associate with RE/MAX Direct in nearby Boynton Beach, recommends Gourmet Deli House, a New York-style delicatessen that has been serving old-school deli food, such as matzo ball soup, grilled Reubens and bagels with lox for decades. Next door, Rollatini serves Italian food in generous portions. The Lake Worth Road corridor also is loaded with grocery stores and retailers. Walmart Neighborhood Market, Presidente Supermarket and Publix are all nearby. Target, Home Depot and Big Lots are among other conveniently located commercial options.
