Kentfield is a versatile North Bay community
Not many communities can claim both mountainous estates and cozy suburban neighborhoods in the flats — but Kentfield can. Wedged between the peaks of Mt. Tamalpais and the creekside Greenbrae community, Kentfield is one of Marin County’s largest census-designated areas, with nearly 7,000 residents calling it home. “It’s a beautiful place. Kentfield is sunnier and less foggy than southern Marin and not as hot as central Marin,” says Judy Smith, a 30-year resident of neighboring Larkspur and a Realtor with Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty. “The reason the prices are so high is because of the natural beauty. You buy here to live outside,” she says.
Kentfield is home to some of the county’s best public schools, along with notable faith-based private options and the performing arts-focused College of Marin. Hundreds of miles of trails await hikers throughout the Baltimore Canyon Preserve and Mt. Tam’s peaks, which rise more than 2,500 feet above sea level. And although shopping in Kentfield itself is limited to a handful of local shops, there are plenty of options along U.S. Route 101 and Interstate 580. With a robust educational framework and family businesses at its heart, Kentfield offers a serene mountain lifestyle less than 20 miles from San Francisco.
It's hard to consider Kentfield suburban when it is so well immersed in nature.

The mountains are calling
Spanning nearly 200 acres, Baltimore Canyon Preserve rolls gently through the foothills of Mt. Tamalpais, offering an extensive multi-use trail network beloved by hikers, bikers and equestrians. In summer, heavy rains feed into Larkspur Creek and create an impressive display at Dawn Falls, one of the park’s most popular destinations. Challenging trails attract outdoor adventurers to explore the various peaks across Mt. Tam, as it’s known locally, while beachgoers can easily skirt traffic by taking backroads to the sandy shores in Bolinas and Stinson Beach about 20 miles away.
Right beside the MarinHealth Medical Center, Hal Brown Park at Creekside offers space for relaxation and recreation, with a soothing meditation labyrinth brightened by creative mosaics. Pesticide-free turf borders a sprawling playscape and picnic area, where parkgoers can enjoy the sound of local performances at the outdoor amphitheater.

Million-dollar properties with million-dollar views
With an average home value above $3 million, Kentfield’s homes are significantly more expensive than neighboring Greenbrae, and “it’s hard to get in for less than $2 million,” Smith says. “The higher end moves a little bit slower, and the location definitely affects our insurance. There haven’t been any wildfires in Kentfield, but the whole Bay Area is on watch,” she says. Enclaves like Kent Woodlands offer hillside mansions and shaded midcentury models at the foot of Mt. Tam, while communities like Kentfield Gardens are conveniently located in the flats within walking distance of schools and parks. Prices can range from $3 million for a modest three-bedroom to nearly $8 million for a five-bedroom estate in the hills, where million-dollar views are well worth the hefty price tag.

Commuting across the Bay
Commuters in Kentfield have more options than most — from local buses to ferries to the famous 101, there’s no shortage of ways to reach major employers 17 miles south in downtown San Francisco. “The ferry is very well used. It’s a straight shot from Kentfield to downtown San Fran, and you can sit back and relax,” Smith says. It takes about 40 minutes to reach the Golden Gate City from the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, while the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, locally known as SMART, offers convenient routes north toward Santa Rosa.
Commuting across the bay by ferry can be a less stressful way to get to and from SF.

For me his area was a very nice place to grow up. It was incredibly safe, I could go out walking in the street at midnight alone if I wanted to and I would be completely fine. Both the public schools and private schools are quite good as well. Its not the most diverse community, and the housing is very expensive which is a little unfortunate. Its not somewhere I want to live in my 20's, but as a child or parent its a great community.
