About Greencastle, IN

Walled-in by community and activities

Whether it's the architecture, quaint downtown or the community one finds from celebrating those aspects of Greencastle, it's a place that draws people in and holds their attention. "You get here, you get involved, you become part of the community and you don't want to leave it," says Realtor Jennifer McCune of Prime Real Estate, who has sold over 200 properties in Greencastle. "The community is so supportive of each other and of the town itself that you just don't want to leave the comfort you find here."

Bourbon tastings and window shopping

Whether they want to shop locally or visit a big box store, residents of Greencastle enjoy a strong collection of highly-rated restaurants, boutiques and shopping centers. From sit-down eateries such as Almost Home to bourbon tastings at the Whisk, there are plenty of options to choose from downtown for formal special occasions and trendy quick fixes, which are often neighbored by shops for locally owned businesses like florists and pharmacies. It all feeds into a robust scene for frequent public events, such as First Fridays and a summer music festival. "You can drive 35 Miles to Plainfield and get an Applebee's, but we have a lot of unique things here that are really nice and draw a lot of people from around the area," says McCune. Even within Greencastle, chains, big box stores and hospitals are close, such as a Kroger and Walmart, which can be found less than a mile east of downtown, or the Putnam County Hospital 3 miles south of downtown.

Curated home designs growing in stock

Built around the campus of DePauw University, Greencastle is a colorful Main Street USA community with a fascinating housing market. Its murals and collection of historic buildings provide a college town charm that many move there hoping to find. Homes sell faster in Greencastle than they do on average nationally, which is primarily due to its stock. The downtown area is mostly older buildings built in a wide variety of styles, from row houses to even some Queen Anne styles, some of which have sold for an affordable range of $100,000 to $200,000. However only a few properties get listed in the downtown area. "Inside the city, there's not a lot of building going on," says McCune. Some new builds are starting to come to the area's outer parts, often in a contemporary-traditional style that often sells for around $500,000. The growth is aimed to carry on Greencastle's contemporary architectural styles while still providing modern amenities. Some of that is happening through the local university, according to vice president for institutional equity at DePauw University Dionne Jackson, who is working on applying for a Lilly Endowment grant to connect Greencastle and DePauw seamlessly. "We're working on proposing something that would actually provide more housing options within the Greencastle community," says Jackson. "One of the things that we have emphasized is that we want whatever we bring to maintain the aesthetics of Greencastle."

Public schools meld with programs at DePauw

Greencastle students attend high-performing schools. A young student most often begins at either Deer Meadow or Martha J. Ridpath Elementary Schools, which both earn a score of B from Niche. Greencastle Middle School earns a B-minus Niche score, while the other option, Tzouanakis Intermediate, earns a score of B. The local high schools, South Putnam and Greencastle, earn Niche scores of B and have many unique student opportunities through partnerships with DePauw University. "One of the things that immediately struck me was how much the arts, in particular, are connected across Greencastle and DePauw," says Jackson, who moved to Greencastle over a year ago. "For instance, the local high school was just here to see our version of Romeo and Juliet at the theater so they can access our shows and benefit from our institution."

Out-and-back hikes from downtown

Greencastle is a stronghold for colorful outdoor recreation. The town has several parks to choose from, such as Robe Ann Park, which offers visitors many fun activities to meet their neighbors, such as skateboarding, pickleball courts and even a pool with a waterslide. But perhaps the most popular park to visit is the DePauw Nature Park, a 520-acre expanse that was once a limestone quarry and now contains over 8 miles of hiking trails, many of which feed out to a highly walkable downtown.

Centrally located to major hubs

If leaving town is no longer avoidable, most commutes to major Indiana cities and towns are drives of no more than roughly 70 miles because "it's centered between Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Lafayette and Bloomington," says McCune.
