Southern hospitality meets convenience
Garden Homes is a flourishing community home for budding families and professionals. What this residential neighborhood lacks in flower beds, it makes up for in quaint housing. Just a few miles north of downtown Greensboro, adjacent to one of Greensboro’s largest parks and in the backyard of a prominent shopping center, Garden Homes is blossoming with convenience. Residents rarely need to leave their cozy borders, and its friendly community makes the area feel even more like home to newcomers and longtime residents alike. “People are so flipping friendly — in Greensboro, in North Carolina,” says Chris Pappalardo, a Realtor and team owner at the Chris Pappalardo Team with 14 years of experience selling in the area. “They wave at neighbors. They wave at strangers. We have Southern hospitality. So imagine now, you’re going to get your mail from your mailbox or walking your dog, and there’s all these people in Garden Homes near you. You’re going to get to chatting, and you’ll get to know them naturally.”
Single-story living, modest yards
The lightly wooded streets of Garden Homes are lined with simple 1950s cottages and ranch-style homes with modest yard space. Although there are a handful of split-level homes, one-story homes are the most common by far. In fact, these one-story houses are a major draw to the neighborhood. “One-level living is becoming huge,” Pappalardo says. “People still want the freedom of having independent living, but they also want the convenience of one-level living and a small amount of yardwork — if not almost none — in our area.” Most houses in the area are less than 1,400 square feet and feature two or three bedrooms alongside what Pappalardo calls an “impressive amount of storage,” a little detail that many homeowners love. Price tags in Garden Homes fall between $180,000 for a fixer-upper and $400,000 for a larger four-bedroom house. “We’re still struggling with inventory,” Pappalardo says. “We have more people moving here than we have houses to sell.”
Major retailers on Battleground Avenue
Shopping centers along Battleground Avenue offer an abundance of shopping. Residents head to ALDI to pick up groceries or shop for clothes at T.J. Maxx, Ross or a local thrift store called Freedom House Thrift. Just 2 miles away, The Greensboro Science Center is a conservation center that functions as a museum, aquarium and zoological park all in one, making it a popular place for residents of all ages to spend an afternoon. Back in Garden Homes, residents can get a morning or afternoon pick-me-up at Starbucks or Green Joe’s Coffee Company, the latter of which is a local Greensboro chain. Stamey’s Barbecue sells full barbecue plates for less than $15 and has must-try cobblers. When they want to treat themselves to a fancier dinner, residents head to Sapporo Fantasy Japanese Steak, which is a local hibachi grill, or Longhorn Steakhouse.
Garden Homes community groups
According to Pappalardo, individual communities within Garden Homes sometimes put together community groups to participate in activities like pickleball. Just 2 miles away, The Greensboro Science Center hosts several events to fundraise for conservation efforts throughout the year. These include anything from the Tuxedo Trot 5K, which raises money for endangered African penguins, to family-friendly events such as Pajama Jam.
STEM at General Greene Elementary
Guilford County Schools has a B-plus on Niche, which lists it as the third-best school district in the Greensboro area. Children in Garden Homes can attend General Greene Elementary School, which is a Science and Technology magnet school that has a B-plus rating and offers interactive outdoor resources like a fossil pit with fossils from the Aurora Phosphate mine. Students can then attend Kiser Middle School, which has a B, and Grimsley High School. Niche gives Grimsley High an A rating and lists it among the top 10 public high schools in Guilford County.
Country Park’s pedal boats, dog park
Just 2 miles away, Country Park is one of the largest public parks in Greensboro, stretching a vast 400 acres. Resting in its heart are two fully stocked fishing lakes with provided piers. For more fun on the water, residents can ride on the pedal boats known for their distinctive dragon, duck and geese designs. Local children love taking a spin – or ten – on the carousel, and an off-leash dog park thrills furry members of the family while 13 miles of meandering nature trails keep bicyclists and hikers busy. Right next door, Jaycee Park serves as the proving ground where athletes test their skills at tennis, baseball, soccer and football.
Just off Battleground Avenue
Garden Homes is bracketed by Joseph M. Bryan Boulevard and Highway 220, which is also known as Battleground Avenue and is studded with bus stops. The neighborhood is just 4 miles from Downtown Greensboro, less than 1 mile from Bethany Medical and 8 miles from the Piedmont Triad International Airport.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
