Scenic walks along Hester Park's lake

"Smith High School's soccer field is always filled with people," says Booker. "There's a community club that competes there. When I lived in the area, I'd walk along the track with my mother. Even the school's swimming pool is open to the public for swimming lessons." Plenty of city parks are nearby, the closest being Hampton Park, which sits just east of the community. The 12-acre park offers amenities for local athletes, like a baseball field and a basketball court. Those who wish to cheer from the sidelines can grab a snack at the park's concession stand. Hester Park is also nearby and features even more athletic amenities like tennis courts and a sand volleyball court. There's also a fitness trail that stretches just over a mile with stops at 13 outdoor workout stations. Hester Park's 6-acre lake is a prime spot for fishing, though many enjoy the view from the park's benches or walking trail. The park is popular for picnicking and hosting gatherings with family and friends. "We have seven shelters available to rent," says Portia Clowdis, an Administrative Assistant at the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. "Four of the shelters fit 40 people, two fit 70 people and we have one that fits 200 people—great for larger events." Residents of Guilford County can rent these shelters at a discounted rate. "There's also a really pretty gazebo there," adds Clowdis. "Shelter number five is my personal favorite because it's quiet and right by the lake."
