Lindley Park residents can enjoy nature as well as city life
In 1917, a Greensboro man named John Van Lindley donated a 60-acre plot of land to the city. It is now home to the Lindley Park community, which rests alongside his eponymous park. A neighborhood association lobbies for amenities like new sidewalks and additional shade trees to replace any aging ones. Community members enjoy a variety of restaurants and businesses within walking distance of homes, and the zoned elementary school is also within the area. With acres of green space nearby, locals have the benefits of nature while remaining close to city amenities.
Lindley Park is located 5 miles west of downtown Greensboro.

Lindley Park and the Greensboro Arboretum
The community surrounds its namesake, Lindley Park, which offers more than 100 acres of green space. It has two playgrounds — one of them is built with inclusive play equipment and wheel-friendly surfaces. Beside the park is the Greensboro Arboretum, a 17-acre space comprised of themed gardens. “It’s a very popular park,” says Roger Pitney, who has lived in the Greensboro area since 1988. “There is a greenway running through, and you can get some exercise and watch the water flowing.” Just west of Holden Road, avid golfers can find the Starmount Forest Country Club, an invitation-only country club that has hosted golf greats such as Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. The Greensboro Coliseum Complex and Greensboro Aquatic Center are less than 1 mile from Lindley Park, and there are several nearby bowling alleys as well.

Lindley Park residents can access restaurants along Spring Garden Street and Walker Avenue. "One of the popular spots is The Corner," says Joyce Eury, chair of the Lindley Park Neighborhood Association. "On the corner of Walker and Elam, there are several restaurants and businesses — Common Grounds, Fishbones, Sticks and Stones." Along Spring Garden Street, the aptly named Spring Garden Bakery & Coffee offers a variety of muffins and provides vegan and gluten-free choices. Nearby Bestway grocery store carries a good selection of necessities, but many locals do their weekly shopping at Whole Foods and Harris Teeter, about 2 miles away. They are both located in the Friendly Center, an upscale open-air mall.

Getting around the Greensboro area
Greensboro’s location makes it central to several North Carolina cities. “Our infrastructure is phenomenal — we have highways, ring roads and an international airport,” Pitney says. “It makes it easy for people to get to jobs in Raleigh and Durham. We also have several industries that have moved to town, including a Boom Supersonic airline manufacturing operation and a Toyota battery factory.” Lindley Park is bisected by Wendover Avenue, a six-lane divided highway that merges with U.S. Routes 70 and 220 and intersects with U.S. Route 29. Greensboro Transit Authority buses make stops along West Market Street and Spring Garden Street and run to and from downtown Greensboro. The nearest airport, the Piedmont Triad International Airport, is about 11 miles away, and it offers direct flights to 13 domestic destinations. The closest Level II Trauma Center is located in the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, less than a 5-mile drive from Lindley Park.

The Lindley Park neighborhood association organizes annual events for residents, including a chili cook-off and an Easter egg hunt. "The Girl Scouts organize an event in December called Candlefest," Eury says. The event takes place in the Arboretum and is centered around thousands of luminaries. Attendees can meet Santa, enjoy live entertainment and toast s’mores. On Saturdays, there is a farmers market along Market Street, just a few blocks from the Lindley Park neighborhood.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
