Proximity to highways is helping this rustic neighborhood grow
Polecat Creek is where the suburbs of south Greensboro give way to the forests and farms of the countryside. Although the neighborhood’s housing stock has traditionally been low, developers have taken a keen interest in the community for its desirable location and have continued to roll out new constructions. “It’s got easy access to many of Greensboro’s highways like Interstates 73 and 85, and the flat terrain and lack of hills make the neighborhood very walkable,” says Angela Byrd, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who has been selling homes around the Triad for almost two decades. “The people who bought my listing were looking to be just outside the city and have a place where the kids could bike.” Most Polecat Creek residents don’t have to pay city taxes, but visiting Greensboro is as simple as crossing I-85.

From midcentury ranchers to modern New Traditionals
Foxcroft is Polecat Creek’s nucleus, a rectangular-shaped subdivision located on the north side of the neighborhood off Randleman Road. “Foxcroft is an HOA community,” Byrd says. “The monthly fees are low, and they mainly go to keeping homes tidy, not any community amenities.” Here, buyers will find a mix of bungalows, national-style-inspired homes and New Traditionals, accompanied by mature trees and occasional sidewalks. Most of this neighborhood was built between the ‘90s and the present day. Since 2024, additional New Traditionals have been coming to Penley Trail, which is located just next to Interstate 85. Many newer builds have attached two-car garages. Outside of Foxcroft, homes tend to sit on larger parcels and follow midcentury ranch-style designs. Single-family homes usually range in price from $60,000 to $500,000. Smaller builds in need of renovation fall on the lower end of this spectrum, while ready-to-go homes with recent construction dates fall on the upper end.

An award-winning high school offers a variety of career pathways
Sumner Elementary receives an overall B-minus from Niche. The school is within a 2.5-mile drive of homes on the north and west sides of the neighborhood. Southern Guilford Middle gets a C-plus, while Southern Guilford High scores a B-minus. “We are very unique because of the various pathways we offer, such as Emergency Medical Technician, veterinary science, automotive, nursing, electrical and carpentry along with rigorous AP courses,” says Dr. Brian Muller, the high school’s principal. “We have even won the Hubert B. Humphrey Jr. School Improvement Award, and our men’s and women’s athletic teams have made the playoffs in recent years.”

Polecat Creek is next to two major interstates
Interstate 85 marks the northern end of the neighborhood, while Interstate 73 passes by to the west. These two highways form the bottom half of the Greensboro Urban Loop, a 40-mile beltway which circles the city. Via the loop, Piedmont Triad International Airport is about a 15-mile drive northwest. “People moving for the new Toyota Battery Plant would have no problem getting there from Polecat Creek thanks to accessible highways,” Byrd says. The megasite as the Toyota plant is called is about 13 to 15 miles to the southeast, depending on which route commuters take.

Situated 4 miles east of the neighborhood, the Pleasant Gardens Volunteer Park is popular for youth soccer games and walks through the forest, as well as its 18-hole disc golf course. Hagan-Stone is a 400-acre green space about 5 miles east of the neighborhood. The park invites residents to stroll through wooded trails, swim in the pool or fish in ponds. Also present is Bradley’s Fun For All Playground, which offers play structures and swings for children of all abilities. The park’s ground is made of rubber to allow safe play. For weekend getaways, Hagan-Stone has several RV and tent campsites with or without electrical connections and bathhouses, though all have access to water. Shannon Hills Park features several paved trails and a small playground, though visitors will have to park on the street. Families visit Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe to glide down an assortment of colorful slides of varying sizes, splash in interactive soak zones or relax on the lazy river. Golf at Grandover, a public, 18-hole course, is approximately 7 miles west of most homes.

Shops and restaurants are just north of the beltway
A Walmart Supercenter, Lowe’s and Shoe Department sit on South Elm-Eugene Street just across from Interstate 85. These retailers are accompanied by fast-food and sit-down chains such as Bojangles, Zaxby’s and Cracker Barrel. Times Square Pizzeria & Italian Eatery nearby serves up New York-style pies by the slice, along with a few other American and international offerings such as chicken marsala. Randleman Road is lined with additional stores such as CVS, Food Lion and Aldi plus several restaurants. Las Koras Mexican Seafood & Grill is known for their live music and Mexican cuisine, serving up dishes such as fish tacos and shrimp enchiladas. For quick errands, a Dollar General is at the intersection of Randleman and South Elm-Eugene Street. Carolina Gardens, a local nursey for perennials, vegetables and more, is next door.
