Suburbia a mere 5 miles from downtown Greensboro
About 5 miles south of Greensboro’s lively city center is the calm, slow-paced residential neighborhood of Spring Valley. Home to its own scenic park and close to plenty of shopping and dining, Spring Valley offers tranquil suburbia without sacrificing access to city entertainment and amenities. "You're close to the city, but still very much in the countryside," says Claudia Valencia, a Realtor with eXp Realty. "Nowadays in Greensboro there's a lot of development, but you'll still find a lot of quiet, wooded areas like this." The neighborhood has a close-knit feel, sharing its name with a charming local eatery where neighbors go to catch up over a steaming mug of coffee and a pile of fluffy flapjacks.
Midcentury brick houses surrounded by trees
Red-brick midcentury homes dominate the community, with nearly every home being ranch-style or split-level. The majority of these houses date back to the 1960s, giving the area a kitschy charm. Prices range from $130,000 to $280,000, and homes feature between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet, with an average of three bedrooms. Towering trees shade the quarter-acre lots, sprinkling the entire area with crunchy leaves of crimson, orange and gold in the fall months.
A plethora of extracurriculars at Smith High
Foust Elementary School sits in the heart of Spring Valley and is home to over 250 students with a student-to-student ratio of 13-to-1. The school has an overall Niche grade of C-plus. Kids go on to attend Jackson Middle School, which has an overall Niche grade of C. The school is part of the GEAR UP Program, which allows students to prepare for post-secondary education. Ben L. Smith High School has a diverse student body comprised of about 1,200 students from over 40 countries. The school offers a variety of extracurricular activities like the International Club, Drama Club, Olympic Weightlifting and Robotics Club. Smith High School has an overall Niche grade of C-plus.
Plenty to do at the namesake Spring Valley Park
Spring Valley Park lines the southern edge of the neighborhood. Sitting off Meadowview Road, the park is a woodsy green space with the South Buffalo Creek running down the center. At the heart of the park is a small playground and a multi-purpose court where residents can bring a ball and play with friends and neighbors. Hillsdale Park is a mile west of the community and down Meadowview Road. The nearly 50-acre park features a paved walking trail that provides leisurely strolls and an additional playground. Across the highway from Hillsdale Park is Rolling Roads Park. Its manicured lawns afford plenty of space for a picnic, or some outdoor exercise. Hiking and biking are both popular pastimes in the area, according to Terrie Booker, a Realtor at Wilson Realty Co. "It's a big community of cyclers we have here," says Booker, "a very active community."
Dinner and a movie at The Four Seasons Town Centre
The Four Seasons Town Centre is a mere 2 miles west of Spring Valley, providing retail shopping and entertainment. The center features traditional mall favorites from American Eagle to Dillard’s, with a food court as its focal point. Attached to the mall is Round1 Bowling & Amusement, which features karaoke, arcade games, ping pong and bowling. Meanwhile, the latest blockbusters screen at AmStar Cinemas. For a quick meal, Sub Station II is a popular eatery known for its subs and gyros. For local country-style homecooked meals, residents flock to the neighborhood diner — Spring Valley Restaurant. There, patrons can choose from classic staples such as flapjacks, fried chicken and biscuits, all washed down with a strong cup of joe.
The Interstate takes drivers where they need to go
Interstate 40 runs along the southern edge of the neighborhood, providing quick access to Greensboro, with all its employers and attractions. Access to a vehicle is a must, as there are no bus stops in or near the neighborhood.
