Lively Greensboro suburb with historic homes
Just west of downtown Greensboro, Westerwood is one of the city’s earliest communities, originally settled in the 1870s. With the University of North Carolina Greensboro bordering the neighborhood to the south, Westerwood is a lively mix of college students, working professionals and young families. With century-old homes setting the scene for an exciting, suburban lifestyle, “Westerwood is in a great location,” says Kate Black of Gate City Real Estate, who has worked in Greensboro as a real estate agent for three decades. “You can walk to downtown, the UNCG campus, shopping and more. You’ll love calling Westerwood home.”

1920s bungalows shaded by trees
Most homes here are Craftsman bungalows built between the 1920s and ‘40s with enclosed front porches; these range from $300,000 for a two-bed, one-bath to $415,000 for a three-bed, two-bath. Larger Foursquares from the 1920s are scattered throughout the community, averaging $400,000 for a four-bed. The neighborhood is lush with greenery, and mature trees often tower over homes, shading them from the summer heat. Every street in Westerwood is lined with sidewalks that connect locals to downtown, the UNCG campus and nearby parks.

Guilford County and UNC Greensboro
In 2022, Guilford County dedicated $2 billion to renovate and rebuild its schools, including those attended by kids in Westerwood. Built in 1928, John Van Lindley Elementary is currently being considered for renovation or a complete rebuild; in the meantime, the county spent over $4 million in 2023 on architectural and engineering services for the school, which earns a B from Niche. Students can continue to the B-rated Kiser Middle before finishing at the A-rated Grimsley High, which was honored as a National School of Character in 2017. Many Grimsley grads go on to UNCG, which lies just south of Westerwood in College Hill.

Lake Daniel and Peabody Park
Found on Westerwood’s northern edge, the 80-acre Lake Daniel Park is “a huge neighborhood draw,” says Elizabeth Farabee of Triad’s Finest Homes, who’s sold residential properties in Greensboro for over a decade. Covered in tall oaks and the trickling streams of North Buffalo Creek, Farabee says, “It’s a beautiful place to play volleyball or tennis, and the trails connect you to nearby areas.” Making a 1-mile loop around the park, the paved Lake Daniel Park TRACK Trail connects to the Lake Daniel Greenway, a 2-mile running and walking path that leads west to the Friendly Homes neighborhood and east to downtown Greensboro.
Part of the UNCG campus, the 34-acre Peabody Park features two preserved open spaces. Grey foxes can be seen roaming among the colorful wildflowers in the Piedmont Prairie section of the park, and large oak trees create a dense canopy over the Peabody Park Woods.

Westerwood Tavern and Friendly Center
Locals can head to downtown Greensboro for a bite to eat, but even closer by is community-favorite Westerwood Tavern; called “The Wood” by regulars, the bar’s simple brick exterior is painted over with a colorful mural of the neighborhood’s name. “The Oakwood Bed and Breakfast is also big here,” Farabee says. “Their specialty pizzas are great, and the menu rotates a lot, so there’s always something new to eat.” The Friendly Center, an outdoor shopping plaza 3 miles to the west, includes a Whole Foods and the Regal Greensboro Grande movie theater.

Walking distance from downtown Greensboro
The western end of the Lake Daniel Greenway takes locals to Cone Wealth Wesley Long Hospital, around 2 miles away; the eastern end is right on the border of downtown and Westerwood, making it easy to access shops and restaurants with just a short walk. The many UNCG students and faculty who live here can use the neighborhood’s broad sidewalks and bicycle lanes to reach the campus, just to the south. US Route 70 is a mile north, connecting locals to Greensboro’s Urban Loop and other locations in the Piedmont Triad. Piedmont Triad International Airport is 9 miles west.

The autumnal Westerwood 5k
Each year in early November, participants in the Westerwood 5k run through the neighborhood and Lake Daniel Park to raise funds for Greensboro Urban Ministry and BackPack Beginnings, charitable organizations that help area people in need. Held since 2019, the event introduced the Middle Mile Challenge in 2021, inviting runners to spice up the competition during their second mile of the race.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
