Suburban enclave gets a brand-new school
Westridge Heights is a small suburb of roughly 200 homes within the orbit of parks and big shopping centers. The community’s centerpiece is the newly opened and centrally located Claxton Elementary, which sits right across from the members-only Pinetop Neighborhood Resort. “A lot of people will move into the neighborhood so they can walk their kids to school or go to the neighborhood resort and play some tennis or swim,” says John Nosek, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway who has sold homes around the Greensboro area for eight years. Visiting the rest of Greensboro is just as effortless from this suburb anchored by Joseph M. Bryan Boulevard, a highway that runs southeast to downtown and west to Greensboro’s beltway and airport. “Residents can get places pretty easily and quickly,” says Jodi Tate, head broker of Blue Door Group Real Estate, who has sold homes in the area for 13 years. “It feels a little bit more urban without being directly downtown.”

Two-story homes in a walkable suburb
Although sidewalks are sparse, Westridge Heights’ uncongested, low-speed streets make for a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. “One of the great things about Westridge Heights is how walkable it is,” Tate says. “It makes the neighborhood attractive to homebuyers.” As do the neighborhood’s lots, which are usually decorated with mature trees and occasional gardens and often span above a third of an acre in size. “Homes were built in the 1970s and ‘80s. Most are two-story and have been renovated as new families move in,” Nosek says. “The neighborhood was built when garages started to become popular, so many homes have detached garages.” Most two-story homes feature Colonial Revival designs, but there are also a fair number of Cape Cods, split-levels and ranch-style houses. Prices run from $350,000 to $700,000 depending on interior space.

Claxton Elementary is open for business
A $1.7 billion bond project paved the way for the construction of six new Greensboro County Schools, including Claxton Elementary. Its former campus was aging and spread out over several buildings. The new facility, opened in August 2024, features collaboration areas, interactive Promethean boards, a two-story library and more. The school earns a B-plus rating from Niche, while Kernodle Middle scores an A-minus, and Western Guilford High is B-rated. Through Western Guilford High’s Signature Career Academy of Transportation, Distribution and Logistics, students can learn about global chain management. The program is very hands-on, requiring students to pilot drones and use a forklift simulator. Guilford College, a private liberal-arts institution founded by Quakers, sits 3 miles southwest of the neighborhood.

Pinetop Neighborhood Resort and prominent parks
A members-only club, Pinetop Neighborhood Resort has tennis and pickleball courts, poolside cabanas, sand volleyball courts, a full-service restaurant and social events such as trivia nights. Forest Valley Park features a basketball court and a wooded playground, and another playground can be found at Carriage Hills Park. Both green spaces are about a mile from the neighborhood. Three miles to the north, Country Park overflows with activities. Pet owners take their canines to the leash-free dog park, families steer pedal boats through the pond and children get introduced to zoo animals and dinosaurs at the Greensboro Science Center located on the park’s grounds. Trees, flowers and bronze sculptures adorn the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden. Just across Hobbs Road, the Bog Garden at Benjamin Park sits on recently discovered wetlands. While visiting the Bicentennial Garden in 1987, Dr. Joe Christian followed a bass swimming downstream to the undeveloped land, which had transformed from a lake to swamp thanks to silt accumulation. Over the next few decades, the parcel was weeded, trash was removed, and the property was converted into a functional park with trails, a boardwalk and an artificial waterfall.
