Well-established roots of White Horse

Lined with established homes and miles of Interstates 85 and 185 running through it, White Horse is a census-designated area around 4 miles southwest of downtown Greenville. "For a long time, the area did not have a lot of turnover," says Jennifer Burton, co-owner of Burton, Williams, and Co. and native to the Greenville area. "In the last 10 years, many more people have moved to White Horse. There's a lot of equity in those homes, and prices have certainly gone up because of how close the area is to downtown Greenville." While White Horse has a noticeable industrial area to the east and interstate roads running through it, the residential areas are considered calm, slightly removed from noisier portions. White Horse is an area of potential for many homebuyers – close to downtown and major commercial areas while still offering homes at a lower price than newer sections of Greenville.

Classic architecture and room to grow

A medley of ranch homes, classic bungalows with gabled dormers and mill-style houses make up most of what is found along the area's residential streets. Mature trees, shrubbery-lined driveways and small front patios add to the coziness of the houses. "There are some builders who have put in newer neighborhoods in White Horse, but it's predominately more established homes," Burton says. "They are built on decent-sized lots, at least a quarter- to half-acre." Prices start around $150,000 and can climb up to $350,000 if the home has undergone significant renovations.

Navigating Greenville to and from White Horse

White Horse is intersected by Interstate 85 and Interstate 185, with a large interchange loop near the center of the area. Bus stops are concentrated mainly on White Horse Road near the industrial district and flea markets on the neighborhood's east side. Due to the spread out residential roads and the presence of busy interstates, the neighborhood is not generally considered walkable.

The original Clock Drive-In and local flea markets

One of the area's main thoroughfares, White Horse Road, is lined with supply stores, several family-owned, fast-casual restaurants and the expansive White Horse Flea Market. The Clock Drive-In has been a staple in the Greenville area since the 1950s and now has several locations, but the original is right in White Horse. With a handwritten menu, locals pull around the drive-thru or head inside the diner-style eatery to enjoy classic burgers and seafood platters. About a mile away, Thomas Creek Brewery has live music and arcade games to accompany craft beers and pub-style food.

The expansive Lakeside Park

Nearby Lakeside Park, situated just off Interstate 85, recently got a new trail system for locals to enjoy. The new walking and biking trail network comprises three connecting loops, all varying in difficulty. There are also four lighted baseball and softball fields, frequently used for recreational league tournaments, and basketball and volleyball courts open to residents in the area. In the summer, 7th Inning Splash Park within Lakeside Park gets packed with people seeking to cool off. Along the eastern part of White Horse is the Saluda River, popular for kayaking and tubing. Year-round, the Staunton Bridge Community Center is an invaluable resource for all-age sports activities and art programs, along with community events and fundraisers.
