Welcome to New Jersey's countryside

Harmony Township is a rural community of Warren County situated in the vast New Jersey Highlands Region and along the Delaware River. It is home to farmers, equestrians and lovers of the great outdoors, where residents take pride in its agricultural heritage and deeply appreciate the land. It is the site of the historic Van Nest-Hoff-Vannatta Farmstead, the beloved Warren County Farmers’ Fair and proximity to mountainside vistas; despite its rural locale, Harmony is well-connected to nearby cities, less than 10 miles from Phillipsburg, Easton and Washington.

Homestead living in country homes far from neighbors

In a community where nature preserves, undulating valleys and homesteads characterize the environment, homes are typically found on heavily forested roads, offering ample privacy. The abundance of open greenspace has led to new constructions, starting at over 3,500 square feet in Neo-traditional and contemporary styles, featuring spacious acreage. Alongside the Delaware River, residents can choose down-river stays or opt for ranch-style homes, colonials and Cape Cods. Home attributes include large front porches with rocking chairs, long driveways and attached garages. Prices fluctuate based on the location within the township, typically ranging from $325,000 for older homes to $850,000 for construction in 2023.

Mountainside vistas, boating, hunting and historic trails

Atop Scott’s Mountain, Merrill Creek Reservoir is the central hub of activity with specific gate times, offering hiking trails, row boating, canoeing, bass fishing and birdwatching. Residents can access the Warren Highlands Trail on Ragged Ridge, home to a rock once used by the Lenni Lenape for smoke signals. Today, it’s a site for mountainside hiking along narrow, forested footpaths and countryside from the Delaware River to the Musconetcong River. Buttonwood Game Preserve covers 155 acres where local hunters pursue native pheasant and quail, with a daily fee or membership required. The preserve also features a 13-station sporting clay course. Harkers Hollow Golf Club provides rolling greens and a pool. The Harmony Township Athletic Association oversees local little leagues.

Wineries and small-town taverns dot the landscape

“Agriculture is our passion; we are in the garden state and want to keep that going,” says William and Abigail Postma, owners of Little Ridge Vineyards. These long-time Warren County residents, who grew up in the farming industry, opened their tasting room for visitors to experience live music and quality wines. Apgar’s Cider Press is renowned for its homemade cider, succulent apples, and sweet peaches, accompanied by garden knick-knacks. Tipton’s Tavern, formerly Lanark Inn, has seen the township’s evolution and keeps its neighborly atmosphere. For general shopping, Harmony Hardware has almost everything, and Harmony Spirits & Grocery is an old-fashioned country store supplying essentials. Larger retail options like Walmart, Target and ShopRite are 5 miles away in Phillipsburg.

Time for the County Farmers’ Fair and Balloon Festival

With its laid-back cookout vibe, Harmony Township Community Day is a lively family affair featuring line dancing, classic car shows and live music. During the festive season, the historic Van Nest-Hoff-Vannatta Farmstead hosts a visit with Father Christmas, eagerly anticipated by the kids throughout the year. In July, the Warren County Farmers’ Fair becomes a major attraction, drawing locals from near and far with activities ranging from tractor pulls to livestock shows. The fair’s annual Hot Air Balloon Festival offers a unique experience, allowing locals to soar through the sky and gaze at the green landscape below.

Kids in school are a part of a sending/receiving relationship

Parents with children can expect to be a part of the Harmony Township School District, providing an environment for kindergarten through eighth grades. Upperclassmen may attend Belvidere High School as part of a sending/receiving relationship with surrounding rural communities. Harmony Township School has after-school programs in robotics, archery and theater. Belvidere High’s offerings include career and technical educational programs centering on woodworking, Floriculture and landscaping. According to Niche, Harmony Township School is ranked with a B-minus, while the high school has a C-plus.

Pride in its agricultural heritage

In 2021, Harmony Township approved $100 million to fund a project to install solar panel farms in the township. However, long-time residents formed the Harmony Citizens Coalition to combat this, claiming the community’s industrialization would affect the soil’s agricultural integrity, wildlife habitats and nature preserves. “Harmony is unique; it is untouched, with many large farming parcels still intact. We want to keep it that way; it’s our little nook of countryside in New Jersey,” says William and Abigail Postma, owners of Little Ridge Vineyards.
