Grosse Pointe residents explore the neighborhood

A bustling downtown retail center, large homes with spacious yards and views of Lake St. Clair make Grosse Pointe a popular neighborhood. Residents are 9 miles away from Downtown Detroit, making it easy to commute into the area for annual car show events or to explore the restaurants there. “What can I say about Grosse Pointe, it sells itself,” says Lynne Juanita Summers, a senior specialist and relocation expert with Rivers Realty Group. “Living in the neighborhood means resort-style living all year long. You’re outside water skiing, boating, swimming and fishing in the summer and ice-fishing, skating and skiing practically in your own backyard.” Locals have options when they want to get out of the house and have fun, either shopping at The Village, boating on Lake St. Clair or supporting locally owned restaurants on Kercheval Avenue.

Shopping at The Village

Residents don’t have to go far to find popular dining and shopping destinations. The Village in Downtown Grosse Point features popular shops like Ann Taylor Loft and Chico’s, as well as other locally owned spots like the Savvy Chic Boutique and Glitter & Scotch. Shoppers can leave their cars at the Village Parking Garage before walking down Saint Clair Avenue to the Sidecar Slider Bar. The Side Street Diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a retro-themed setting. “There are so many, and each restaurant has its own atmosphere,” says Mary Lynn Martin, a local librarian. “People like to visit good restaurants close to home.” For even more options, residents drive down Kercheval Avenue to stop into the Dirty Dog Jazz Café for live music and bistro fare or Flyleaf to find a good book to enjoy with a cocktail. When residents want to cook at home, they pick up essential ingredients at Kroger, Fresh Farms Market or Trader Joe’s.

Spacious homes near Lake St. Clair

The Grosse Pointe neighborhood was originally founded in the late 1800s. Future residents can find condos, duplexes and single-family homes with Tudor, Colonial and Federal-inspired designs. Some might move into a one-bedroom condo for $80,000 to $100,000. Those who need more room can find four-bedroom homes closer to the lake for $800,000 to over $1 million. Some three-bedroom condos and single-family homes might sell for $350,000 to $800,000. The homes in Grosse Pointe sit close together, but homeowners still get large yards that extend away from the homes. Residents can walk along the paved sidewalks that run in front of their homes, and many park their cars on uncovered driveways or in detached garages that sit in their backyards.

Meeting national authors at Grosse Pointe Public Library

Throughout the year, The Grosse Pointe Public Library hosts various events that bring in families from around the neighborhood. “We have an annual event in May called Books on the Lake where we bring in national authors to an outside venue to fit everyone,” Martin says. “But we put on so many events here, and people sometimes have to be on waitlists to get in.” Local artists bring their best work to The Grosse Pointe Art Fair every May at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Families also team up and head downtown to show off their mini golfing skills in the Main Street Mini Masters tournament every April.
